10. South Park: The Fractured But Whole - (Xbox One, PS4 & PC) - 55pts
Spudregus_87 said:A whole lotta laughs. Feels like you're directing a 10-hour episode.
9. Cuphead - (Xbox One & PC) - 57pts
'Biggy_Boy' said:The idea of using 1930s-era style art for a classic run-and-gun type of game in 2017 was an intriguing prospect, and I think the developers pulled it off really well. It's easy to judge it purely on its unique art style, but it's how they fuse that with the gameplay and imbue many of the bosses with such charisma and charm that made the game feel so solid and cohesive for me. It's pretty challenging, though, and had me on the verge of breaking my controller a bunch of times. At least that adds to the sense of accomplishment when beating a boss.
'dwwaino' said:I had to think about this one. It's a small game and besides the fantastic art direction it's nothing new. But that's the charm. I really miss the style of games from 20+ years ago. They weren't grand, movie like experiences. They were more a test of your skills. You were given a set amount of lives and hit points and you went through levels of ever increasing difficulties with a boss at the end. Typically you couldn't get through them first go so it took practice. Recently I started a blog (nothing great but just a place to get rants off my chest) and this was actually my first topic. Cuphead takes me back to this place and it's why I decided to squeeze it in here.
8. Player Unknown Battlegrounds - (Xbox One & PC) - 61pts
'dwwaino' said:I was always going to include this but the question was just where. I haven't played it anywhere near the amount as some have here but I appreciate it the same none the less. This is my quick pick up and play game when I've got some time to burn. I enjoyed the early access but 1.0 (on PC anyway) feels like a new game. Few other games have made my heart race as much as PUBG when I'm down to final 5 or 10. My best finish is still only 3rd and watching the replay I couldn't believe how stupidly I threw my game away. But that's what this game is all about. Not that many would noticed as they turn all settings down for a competitive edge, but the graphics are outstanding on ultra. This is probably one of if not the best multiplayer experience there is right now.
7. Wolfenstien II: The New Colossus - (Xbox One, PS4 & PC) - 63pts
'calyam' said:We really are living in a golden age of first person shooters. Wolfenstein 2 was the pick of the bunch for me during 2017. It combines a strong narrative with great mechanics. At times it's borderline insane. Most of the time it was just good fun.
'The Big Sauce' said:Pretty much all of the best moments in this game I could never have predicted. The story of BJ Blazkowicz is one of the most ridiculous rides I've been on. Unlike a lot of others, I still really enjoyed the shooting in this which is why it is so high on my list. It feels like the whole shooter package, like if DOOM 2016 had an amazing story to go with it. The game is funny, charming, action packed. Play it.
6. Prey - (Xbox One, PS4 & PC) - 72pts
'Jaxes' said:FPS with rpg elements, oh baby. Really well done, good story, good atmosphere, thinking required, challenging enough in certain parts & just a good time all around.
'Biggy_Boy' said:I love System Shock and its now mounting spiritual successors. Prey does a really good job of creating an immersive FPS experience that incorporates RPG elements, and what I think it did best was use the environment to tell its story. It doesn't just pay lip service to the idea of "play your way", but really does offer the player a number of ways to approach a scenario and deal (or not deal) with situations. Talos I is a beautiful, detail-rich environment to explore that I couldn't help but want to check every nook and cranny of for loot, clues and backstory. The real knocks for me were the combat mechanics and the lack of enemy variety.
5. Horizon Zero Dawn - (PS4) - 74pts
'The Big Sauce' said:I didn't think the makers of Killzone had this in them. This game is pretty much your quintessential 9/10 game. Aloy is a fantastic protagonist and the central mystery the plot revolves around is pretty damn good for an open world game. The game starts slow, but once you hit Meridian the game doesn't really let up.
4. Assassins Creed Origins - (Xbox One, PS4 & PC) - 77pts
'bulletride' said:Beautifully crafted recreation of Egypt and has really lifted the benchmark of what we should expect from an AC game. Only disappointment was the assassinations themselves were overly simple and a step back from the much improved Syndicate.
'calyam' said:Assassin's Creed is one of my favourite franchises. It's the only series that makes great use of historical settings. History provides such a rich source of material and I've always been disappointed that so few games take advantage of that. This is the best Assassin's Creed game and I don't think Ubisoft have ever created an open world as rich and vibrant as their version of Egypt. The narrative and gameplay was good and the spectacle was elevated by the presence Caesar and Cleopatra.
3. Persona 5 - (PS4 & PS3) - 89pts
'dwainno' said:A few times I wondered if this was my GOTY. It came close, it was probably a few areas where I felt it padded out and I lost control (even more so than Persona 4) that probably spoiled it just that little bit for me. The first thing that got me was the soundtrack, Persona games always deliver in spades here. Then it was the art and the characters and finally the story. It was refreshing to put 50+ hours into a game that I wasn't doing so for trophies or any other filler.
'bulletride' said:Effortlessly stylish, one of the most enjoyable JRPGs I've ever played. Has some serious pacing issues but still probably the most addicted I've been to a single game this year. So much so that I went out and bought a Vita so I could keep playing via remote play when the family took over the TV. Another brilliant soundtrack narrowly pipped by NieR.
2. Super Mario Odyssey - (Nintendo Switch) - 104pts
'Runnin Blue' said:Just a joy to play from start to finish (and beyond). Again, fan feedback seemingly played a part in this game with Nintendo taking the series back to it’s Mario 64/Sunshine roots. A great example of the universal fun of a Mario game is when I took my Switch with me to Melbourne and my 14 year old nephew, who is solely a PS4/Xbone gamer, would not put it down. Now he is begging his parents for a Switch for Christmas.
1. Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild - (Nintendo Switch & Wii U) - 131pts
'TheKanga' said:A vast & beautiful open world to explore however you wish.
Challenging bosses and creative puzzles.
A welcome refresh for the series.
'The Big Sauce' said:I've bounced off of almost every Zelda I tried. This was the first one that I finished and thoroughly enjoyed it. The game encourages creativity, pushes you to try things and forces adaptability. The shrines are pretty much perfectly designed challenges (with the exception of the motion control ones that have a special part of hell reserved for whoever decided they were a good idea). Quick to play and solve, but you still get satisfied when you work it out. If the game had a tighter story it would probably be spot or two higher.
'Runnin Blue' said:What more is there to say? A magical game that proved Nintendo can listen to fan feedback and not be scared to try something a little different. For their first attempt at a truly open-world game, it knocked it out of the park. Interesting to see what they do next with the series.
