Yesterday Bulldogs had 10 more scoring shots than West Coast but lost by 5 points. What is the greatest number of scoring shots by the losing team in excess of the winning team in the history of the VFL/AFL and from all competitions?

The largest I can find is from 1957 Fitzroy 10.31.91 def by Richmond 16.10.106, that is losing with 15 more scoring shots.

while not in the ballpark of those records, in last year's 2nd semi final Collingwood kicked 9.18 to St Kilda's 17.4, to lose by 34 points.

At 3/4 time it was 5.16 to 14.2.

Such was the difference in conversation that St Kilda scored 50% of the time it went inside 50, and 9 out of 10s of those scores were goals, ie 40% of inside 50s resulted in goals, which is a freakish stat. For Collingwood it was 16%.

Incidentally, the biggest ever loss when having more scoring shots is this little affair...

Wow!

I can't believe no one has mentioned the 1948 Grand Final yet.

Another game involving Melbourne is against North in 1999. The Dees scored fourteen goals to North's twelve, yet they lost by one point.

I reckon Melbourne scoring three more goals than Essendon in the 1948 Grand Final, yet failing to win, would have to be a record.

Geelong and Collingwood played a couple of games in 1976/77 which were rather strange scoring wise. In 1976 at Kardinia Park, Geelong won 15.9.99 to Collingwood's 11.27.93, ie 38 scoring shots to 24.

And at VFL Park the following year Geelong upset the ladder leading Pies with a 16.6.102 to 12.25.97 win, 22 scoring shots to the Pies who had 37. That win by Geelong came a week after Hawthorn massacred Geelong 28.23.191 to 13.6.84. (51 scoring shots to 24!)

From the three Hawthorn/Geelong games of last year and the opening round this year, the Cats sprayed 12.16.88, 11.23.89 and 15.21.111 The Hawks in the same games scored 11.11.77, 18.7.115 and 16.7 103. Thus, Geelong had 38 goals 60 behinds:)eek:) to Hawthorn's 45 goals 25 behinds in those three games.
