According to KG Rhett Biglands will announce his retirement within the next few days

KG's rumour about a Crows player retiring was supposedly Rhett Biglands. KG spilled the beans about 6:30 tonight about his rumour of a Crows player announcing his retirement. He said that his sources said that it was going to be announced today, but it obviously didnt happen and KG said to expect it announced very soon. He will apparently work for the AFC in a role that has not yet been announced.

Good luck Rhett in your future endeavors and its good to see him continuing on at the AFC after his retirement.

I was a Bigland's fan, a BIG UNIT that wanted to impose himself on the game

all the best

Not a suprise unfortunately, feel for the big man, 1 knee reco was bad enough, but 2 in a row is just devastating, wish him well with his new role at the club. (Wonder what it will be? Fashion director?)

Re: According to KG Rhett Biglands will announce his retirement within the next few days

Nice of KG to announce it, instead of letting Biglands do it.

Good servant for the Club - but I guess the rapid rise of Maric and Griff means he's too much of a risk.

May have a career in the media, or, if that fails, a career as a Patrick Swayze impersonator.

Re: According to KG Rhett Biglands will announce his retirement within the next few days

Well done Rhett. You've done a brilliant job as a player with the AFC and you've made an excellent descision here, for your own health and personal sake.

I'm not going to blame Van Berlo, these things just happen in football. A pack of players diving for the ball, Biglands went in then a diving Van Berlo collected his left leg, sideways from the medial side. The leg bent 30 degrees outwards, Biglands clutched his knee, was helped up and limped off to the bench. He sat there, knee iced up, on a very dark and forgetful day for the AFC.

Probably a pragmatic decision, probably had already been told he would be delisted at the end of the season, hence it was better for him to jump, rather than being seen to be pushed.

Best of luck to him in his post AFL playing career

Was that the first or second injury?

Like I said in the other thread, I have no doubt the Club will keep Rhett on in a media role in some capacity (they trialled him last year with the original reco). He's a top bloke Biggles... and I wish him luck.

Everyone knew it was Michael Wilson and i didn't hear any complaints

It wouldn't suprise me if the club let it slip to avoid speculation.

I said to my mates that we would lose when that happened; Biglands and Clarke were doing a good job of negating the Eagles Midfield; but Clarke didn't have it in him to ruck the majority of the game by himself.

First one, in the 06 PF. Second one was in pre season this year.

Second one could have been VB mind control. It's happened before - the boy's got the force.

I still think that Biglands going down was the moment that cost us the PF in 2006. Cox is an incredible player, and may well have got on top of Clarke and Biglands in the 2nd half anyway - but at least Biglands would have given him a physical test, and maybe might have worn him down a little.

I'll save my tribute till Rhett announces his retirement, not KG.

the wife is shattered!!!

good luck rhett, you were an honest player, who gave his all in a very good team

Re: According to KG Rhett Biglands will announce his retirement within the next few days

It must have been terrible for him to go down in 2006 which until the injury, was a career best season for him. Then to reinjure the knee this year, was the end for him. Darcy made it back after 2 knee reconstructions but he went from the best ruckman to a shadow of his former self.

Anyway, good luck in the future Rhett and feel free to populate the world with aggressive ruckmen! :thumbsu:

Looks like it will be today.

He was never in the AA category as a player but he certainly gave 100% to the club and playing group and that’s all any support can ask. Great effort from the dirty dancer, now he can develop his media interest that he seems very good at. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Re: According to KG Rhett Biglands will announce his retirement within the next few days

Tough call but one that needed to be made for both parties.

Well Done Rhett you played about 100 more games than I thought you would, but he did give his all week in week out.

hopefully that career in modelling will come through :D

Re: According to KG Rhett Biglands will announce his retirement within the next few days

It's official

http://www.afc.com.au/tabid/4417/Default.aspx?newsid=65739

Rhett Biglands announced his retirement from the AFL today.

After two knee reconstructions he feels that his body would struggle to cope with the rigours of the game. Biglands said: “The way the young talls in our club are going I don’t think they will need me to progress as a team and to be honest the way the body is I doubt whether I would cope at AFL level."

Biglands, 31 next month, was drafted to the club at the end of 1999 after playing for the Woodville-West Torrens Football Club in the SANFL. He had been on Port Adelaide's inaugural AFL list in 1997 but was delisted after just one year.

Biglands' first match for Adelaide was against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on April 8, 2000, when he became the 113th player to represent the club. He played 18 games in his first season.

In total he he played 134 games for Adelaide – playing his 100th against Fremantle on July 3 2005 at AAMI Stadium. Only 14 Crows have played more games for the club. He played in the winning 2003 Wizard Cup Grand Final.

Unfortunately he seriously injured his left knee in the 2006 preliminary final against West Coast at AAMI Stadium and required a reconstruction. He missed all 2007 and then re-injured the knee early this year and required a second reconstruction in February.

Biglands has not ruled out the possibility of playing SANFL with Woodville-West Torrens next year. He is also likely to work within the Adelaide Football Club's Commercial/Marketing division, a role he has been involved with during his rehabilitation.

Club CEO Steven Trigg said: “Rhett has been a hard working and committed player for our club and did not deserve the bad luck which dogged the end of his career. We thank him for his efforts and wish him well in the future.”

Sad way to end a career, but the great memories will last forever.

All the best for the future

All the best for the future Rhett.

Re: According to KG Rhett Biglands will announce his retirement within the next few days

If he didn't do his knee in that Prelim it is very likely that he and alot of other Crows would have premiership medallions right now.

It was the worst time to be injured too, he was in great form.

Re: According to KG Rhett Biglands will announce his retirement within the next few days

well done to the big fella for maximising his talent :thumbsu: interesting stat below in the article. if he hadnt done the knee he may well have ended up around the 200 game mark

He was a very good player, its unfortunate he had those two knee recos and couldn't come back from it. Well done on a fine career.
