There’s a lot that puzzles me in footy. But right up there is this. Somehow an illegal trip action receives a lesser punishment than a legal tackle which went horribly wrong.

One was a football action which all players are encouraged to do, especially a defender trying to stop a forward. And due to a very unfortunate set of circumstances it resulted in an awful injury.

While the other was entirely preventable, unnecessary, was intended to deliberately hurt if not injure, and is what used to be known affectionately as a ‘dog act’.

Bewildering.
And he wins the medal for playing in the fashion which would have made Neale Daniher proud.

I'd have thought there was no hope he could be convicted but who am I to know.
I don't say that because I think he is guilty- it's because I never trust the AFL where every decision has political undertones or is made to placate the baying mob.

The tackle lasted about 2 seconds. The AFL act as if you can pull out a textbook and study the rules half way through.
And also foresee what is going to happen before it does.. why would Bill release the tackle when he didn't know what was going to happen in that nanosecond? 🙄

Maybe, but the mob seems to be baying in Billy’s favour at the moment. I think the outrage will be far greater if the suspension is upheld than if he gets off.

In cases like this where the AFL defence is "a 'reasonable player' could have released the tackle to not pull Mihocek down with him.", I would really love to see actual examples. Specifically, here is some video from the last 6 weeks of 10 players doing what you say they should. In this specific case I doubt they could find any. So how then can the AFL defence be based on this?
(But that would require a degree of forethought, planning and consistency not otherwise seen from headquarters, wouldn't it....)
