Stingrays

Bit of a prodigy this guy, kicked 20 straight one day (OK, under 14's, but it made the Sun).

His kicking accuracy and depth is terrific, has done a beep above 17 and looks like he's cruising in Under 18's. Doesn't seem to crash into packs so much, but he oozes professional footy player. Very high hurt factor, though he does attract attention and I'm not sure of his record in beating tags. Tagged Aish in the champs and did well. Watch the Stingrays and he often starts in the middle/ half back, takes the kick ins and then gets to the stoppage.

I'm no underage expert, but I'd love him at the Tigers. If height is the only reason that he'll go 15-23 and not 7-15, then I think he's a very solid investment, and good buying.

What's with all these juniors that can do 15+ in the beep test (and it seems like every second kid does), yet struggle to run out a game at AFL level? I know AFL footy is a big step up from junior footy, but a 15 beep test is elite in my book, yet it doesn't seem to mean a whole lot as far as practical endurance goes, especially at the next level.

Different type of endurance. Its been said many times before but track fitness and football fitness are two different things.

He was regarded as a sure thing top 10 pick at the end of last year but ever since he got injured on his trip with the AIS his stock has plummeted.

Because as soon as 85kg+ blokes continuously crunch into them it takes a lot out of them.

Well then why do we laud beep test endurance, when it doesn't really have a whole lot of practical application?

It does matter, some players just cannot run games out, regardless of how much they get hammered. Others just have the physical side of things to worry about.

No, but when it seems like every kid is listed as being able to do a 15+ beep test, yet take years to develop the requisite endurance for AFL footy, it becomes a bit redundant as a measure of actual football endurance.

Every kid? Whitfield was outstanding this year. Many others have been great. I think that running isn't the issue, their inability to cop a hit every contest is.

Well I'm exaggerating a bit, but it seems like in pre-draft write-ups, most kids are listed as running a 15+ beep test.

How on earth do you get that level of fitness as a teenager? Incredible

Very good TAC finals series.
His stocks must be rising, though he still seems unlikely to be called out before 14 or so and remains a chance of being 20+.

Height is an issue

"The small midfielder built his endurance game as a teenager, when he started doing long-distance running over summer.

"When I was about 15 I played cricket for school but I knew I wasn't trying to go far with my cricket, so I decided to do something that would help me in the off-season (and) took up triathlons mainly for pre-season fitness," he said.
