Just wanted know what biographies and auto-bigraphies anyone has read about a band or particular artist? I just finished reading "Heavier than Heaven-a biography of Kurt Cobain by Charles R. Cross" and it was bloody interesting to read about his life and how screwed up he was. I already knew what he was like but now i know why things happened and the details, just want to know if there is any other ones worth reading?

Currently reading the autobiography of Lemmy from Motorhead, and formerly of Hawkwind, and the Rocking Vicars.

Very entertaining read so far, about a third of the way through it.

I've read that, it is a great book. I think more than telling you how 'screwed up he was', it really tells you the depths of where his childhood stemmed from and where it went from there. Loved it.

Ohhh mate, do yourself a favour : Motley Crue , The Dirt, simply the best.

John,

Is that the Nikki Sixx book? I'm not sure if it's the same one I want. I know there are a few, but I am after the one Nikki wrote. Do you know what it's called?

Cheers.

I forget the title, but Frank Zappa's autobiography is well worth a read, it gives a very funny insight into the music biz. Also Brian Wilson's biography (which again the title escapes me) is very interesting. That guy was seriously out to lunch.

A better one on Kurt is "Who killed Kurt Cobain?". Its extremely interesting, and shows a lot of circumstantial evidence pointing to Courtney Love as having something to do with it. Not saying I neccisarily buy all the arguments, but it makes you think.

Yes - brilliance. Sheer brilliance. A story you can't believe on every single page. If you wonder why Ozzy Osborne is so whacked now a quick read of this will make you understand.

Even the first paragraph is hilarious!

A must buy.

Best Nirvana book is Come As You Are by Michael Azzerad from Rolling Stone. Very comprehensive from their early days, actual interviews with all the bands (including the 7 drummers before Grohl) and well written.

Agree totally with Motley Crue - The Dirt. Gene Simmons and Billy Thorpe were ok, David Lee Roth wasn't very good.

I bought the two Thorpie books together in one volume for $10 the other day, absolute steal. Will probably start reading it next week after the Lemmy book's finished.

I bought the David Lee Roth one after a loooooooooong search, and wasn't disappointed. sure, the constant immodesty and bravado gets a bit same-ish, but that's just Dave and the book would seem contrived and tame if he had even a hint of modesty anywhere in it. Very entertaining read.

For pure information & biographical value, Iron Maiden's "Run To The Hills" book (written by a Mick Wall from the UK's Kerrang) is absolutely fantastic. I've got the version from about 1995, which covers up to Bruce leaving the band. It's since been re-released with a new cover and a few extra chapters, covering 1995-2000, which presumably included Blaze Bayley leaving, Bruce re-joining, and the subsequent new album. Keen to get my hands on the re-issue.

That would be 'Wouldn't It Be Nice - My Own Story', most of it was written by Dr Landy and someone else who's name escapes me. A very famous book, was the subject of many many years of legal action since most of it is purely made up. Landy kept Brian pretty majorly drugged up so he could get away with doing things like that.......lovely man. :o

Anyways, my selection is 'The Nearest Faraway Place - Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys and The Southern California Experience' by Timothy White. Essentially it's a book about the Beach Boys, but goes into great detail on everything that was going on in Southern California at the time - other artists, popular fads, political things etc etc.........a fascinating read and a book I'd highly recommend to anyone interested in that era.

The beauty of this book is that everyone gets their say, no punches are pulled, band members, management, friends. It`s not Nikki`s, but he has a fair bit of input. I can not recommend it enough, literary magic.

Yes....read that book. Fantastic insight into Cobain's problems. I just feel sorry for him really. just misguided from the start to the end.

There is another Cobain book. Its just called 'Kurt Cobain' by Christopher Sandford. It's ok but not as good as Cross' masterpiece.

Read "5 to 1 - the Pearl Jam story' which is ok....and i cant find any other books on them.

*Note do not by "Unchained - the story of Mike Starr and his rise and fall in Alice in Chains" Worst book I have ever read in my life.

There's a Beatles book called 'The Love You Make' and the name of the author escapes me (Peter Brown?) but it's one of the best books I have ever read on the band, and trust me I've read lots! :p

Try Mick Jagger:Unauthorised, it's outrageous, whether it's all true or not is neither here nor there it's just a riotessly good read.

Definitely high on the sleaze factor.:D

Nobody Gets out Alive is a good bio of Jim Morrison as well.

One I read on Hendrix [Scuse Me While I Kiss The Sky?] was great
