purchased it today and what a great rock album.
Man thats bringing back some memories, heaven and hell, die young, lonely is the word.

I reckon if you put it up against whats on offer today tho, it almost qualifies as glam rock. Dio was a trained opera singer too. But Ozzy, in the early stages of Sabbath, was quintessential Sabbath, the self named album is without doubt their best.

Great Album.
If u like Dio singing with Sabbath get Mob Rules.

Dio also did a third album in the early 90's with Sabbath called Dehumanizer.

The world is full of Kings and Queens
Who blind your eyes and steal your dreams
Its Heaven and Hell

Love that lyric

Great album. Ozzy is Sabbath but geez R J Dio has an absolutely awesome voice! Listen to him in Dream Evil and Holy Diver.

Read a little snippet somewhere a couple of days ago that Ronnie James and Tony Iommi are supposedly collaborating on a new album very soon. Just wish I could remember where I read it now.

RONNIE JAMES DIO To Collaborate With TONY IOMMI On New BLACK SABBATH Project - Oct. 23, 2005 Legendary heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio has revealed during an interview with BBC Radio 2's "Masters of Rock" program that he will once again be collaborating with BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi.

"At this particular point — if all doesn't fall through, and I doubt that it will — Tony Iommi and I are going to write a couple of tracks together for a project that I think is called 'Black Sabbath – The Dio Years'," Dio said. "So that'll be two unreleased tracks which I'm sure will be interesting to old SABBATH fans, and maybe [even] the new SABBATH fans."

To listen to a playback of the "Masters of Rock" program featuring Dio, click here (the above-mentioned quote can be heard approximately 36 minutes and 10 seconds into the show — at the 19:36:10 mark).

Dio recorded a total of three studio albums with BLACK SABBATH — 1980's "Heaven and Hell", 1981's "Mob Rules" and 1992's "Dehumanizer" — in addition to appearing on the classic live album "Live Evil" in 1983.

Dio is currently touring Europe with his solo band, which currently includes guitarist Doug Aldrich (WHITESNAKE) filling in for an injured Craig Goldy. Check out pictures from the group's headlining show Saturday night (Oct. 22) at the Astoria in London, England: Wire Image.

I think its agreed by everyone that Dio has one of the greatest rock voices ever heard.
If it comes to fruition , I cant wait for that new colaboration.

To me this is easily the best Sabbath album. The other two RJD offerings are patchy (although Mob Rules is still underrated and worth buying), and Ozzy is the face and voice of classic Sabbath, but this album is better than anything the original line up did IMO.

Track 8 on Dehumanizer (To Late) is probably the best song IMO that Dio/Sabbath ever did. It has everything. Classic Dio vocal mixed with that mellow start that even your mum would like and ending up with the typical Sabbath "slow shudder doom" riffs and classic Iommi lead break.

If anyone has never heard this song, do yourself a favor and get the album.

To Late = GOLD

As for a solo Dio song, 'All the fools sail away' is right up there with one of his best.

Dios version of Butterflys Ball is an obscure track to look out for.

Yeah I seem to remember this song having a cartoon film clip with a frog as the main character. Great song

Roger Glover, bassist of Deep Purple fame,
organised it, after Blackmore supposedly wanted him sacked him from DP.

After BB Glover then went and joined Blackmores Rainbow (go figure),
but when Butterfly Ball was performed live Gillan was lead,
not RJD.

Great song though.

I'm no heavy metal fan but Heaven and Hell was one of my favorite albums when I was a kid. In fact I wore it out and had to buy another copy.

The Rainbow Live album with Dio as the main vocalist is probably one of the best live albums I've ever heard. David Coverdale (Whitesnake) makes a guest appearance for the song 'Mistreated' which is a highlight of the album.

Love the way Rainbow started their concerts with a piece of 'The Wizard Of Oz' soundtrack with Dorothy saying "We must be over the rainbow (the word rainbow echoed)" followed by Ritchie Blackmore playing the tune to "Somewhere over the rainbow" with power chords. Gives me goosebumps.

Good stuff !

So,who actually wrote the song ?

I know that the story was written way back,by William Roscoe (1753-1831)
The Butterfly's Ball, and the Grasshopper's Feast,I think was the original name.

Saw Rainbow live in 1977 at festival hall melbourne, one of the great early rock experiences of my life.

Heaven and Hell,
should be currency in most countries.

Neon Knights, Lost Children of the Sea, Heaven and Hell.

Utter classic with RJD at the front.

Dont forget Walk Away.....even though its the most commercial track on the album its still great.
