Really impressed by our acquisition of Weller and Templeton - 2 genuine chances to make it from the rookie list. Add Tommy Curren and that makes 3 players from the rookie list that should make it, (TC already has IMO, and Mav should if he applies himself as he has the talent).

A huge bonus with regards to our rebuild and makes our list that much stronger as TC & Mav cement themselves in the senior lineup and Templeton develops....
 
What I like, is not withstanding retirements (which will trickle along the next 2 years, then be nothing), it's REALLY hard to pick the possible delistings. Lever and Staley had looked like they were in the gun for the last 2 years, for example. You kinda get the feel that when any of the new crop DO have to be delisted (to fulfill AFL list requirements) we'll all see it as a hard call. That's a great place for our list to be.

Murdoch, Milera, DTL, and Dunell are as near as it gets, but none of them choose themselves like we've had before.

Murdoch? He's only been here for a year and I would have thought showed good development throughout the year at both AFL and VFL level, often in roles that were relatively new to him. He has more than enough attributes to make it, much more than the likes of Lever and Staley did, IMO. I wouldn't have thought he's anywhere near where the other 3 you named are, as far as potentially being delisted. Not even close, unless he goes a long way backwards this year and we're desperate to clear spots.

This. With this regarded as a strong draft and us likely wanting at least 3 picks in it, on top of anyone we trade for, or get through FA and with us potentially wanting to upgrade as many as 3 from the rookie list (Mav, Eli and Minch, who either gets upgraded or delisted), I'm finding it extremely difficult to see how we clear enough spots, unless at least a couple retire (and at this stage I'd only lock Lenny in for that) or we trade at least a couple.

But the other thee are also proven to be able to play at AFL level to some extent.
The only thing about Murdoch is that we don't know if he'll be good enough yet, He's like Nick Heyne at the start of 2010. Pierce is another but you need time for talls..
Like I said , none of them choose themselves. Oh I forgot about Shenton, he's probably one of the lowest on the pecking list.
 
I may see things a bit different to some on here on this but FWIW....

IMO players need to be selected on their worth for the team and to get the match ups right.
I've been waiting patiently for Seb Ross & others to impress but haven't seen that much so far.
Honestly, if some of these new guy's come in and surpass them in training effort / skill and tank to keep going for longer then sorry, I'd play the new guy over someone who has been at the club for 1 or 2 years but not showing as much.
There is a plethora of selection options now and this creates competition for spots which we haven't had for years.

May the fittest, strongest, most skilled and committed players get the gig's each and every week.
Fight for your spot and the rewards will come............

All I can say is go and look at Joey's stats over the years, and tell me you'd prefer to play Rob Eddy.

Montagna was 6 years in before he racked up 10 contested disposals, Ross did it twice last year.

Let me clarify. I'm not knocking Seb Ross! I really like him as a player and am looking to see him come on big time.
He doesn't have the biggest tank so far but no doubt has been working hard on it.

I probably shouldn't have put any name as I was simply making the point that time at the club is not the best reason to be picked for a game.
I could equally say look back at Smith, Jones and Brown when they started and the difference it made to the team and the excitement it introduced to all Saints supporters.

I take it much of that is referring to my post, but you do realise that I said exactly the same thing, don't you, if I was one of those you say you may see things differently to?

To be fair they are completely different players. Joey is outside and Seb is totally inside.

Richo doesn't come across as the type of coach that would pick a player just because he's 'shiny & new'. They'll earn their spots & I expect the much spoken about & rarely followed 'integrity of selection' to be firmly enforced.

FWIW this early, Siposs is one who's career at StK is on the borderline. If his body is right he has to show a lot more intensity this year.

It was only 12 months ago, we were talking up Siposs as the next BJ..
Maybe he got ahead of himself, just like we did.. Was gifted a few games last year, for some unknown reason whilst obviously not 100%..Has 2 yrs to run on his contract, but will want to show some real progress this year..
 
I rate Sippo but he's a man now & has to start physically asserting himself on the game. Murdoch offers that physicality already, as well as a kick like a mule.

A lot of us maybe overrated Sippo as our cupboard of young players looked a bit bare 12 months ago & he looked most likely.

I wasn't really directing it at your post so don't go getting paranoid on me.
Simply making a statement that IMO time at the club is not a good enough reason to get selected over talent, effort, ability, endurance.

I certainly hope so, on both fronts. I also don't reckon Richo would do that, but it may be that someone from higher in the food chain up is pushing for us to pick the youngest ones, because it's such good PR. The amount we're pumping them up and pushing their names forward in the media makes that a distinct possibility I reckon.

Pretty much agree with that. He's got a hell of a lot more competition for spots this year than he's had from those around his age in the past couple of years. I think he is an example of what can happen when you give someone really young games when they probably don't "deserve" them, as has happened with him at times in his 3 years. I think some can feel almost like they are "entitled" to them, as a result, rather than feeling like they have to really earn them and be legitimately performing better than the next guy to get them.

That depends a lot on their personalities as well though. It's not the sort of thing I'd expect to happen to a Newnes, or Saunders, for instance and I don't think it would be the case with Billings or Dunstan either, but I would still prefer for them to only go past the likes of Ross, Saunders, Webster, Wright, Siposs and so-on if they are legitimately better and more able to play a full game than them already. I don't think it would be right for them to push past them in the pecking order otherwise.

I don't think that's necessarily the case. I genuinely rate his games at the end of 2012 as the best games I'd seen from anyone under 20 years of age for us for several years (not that there's all that much to beat) and he just had so much going for him for someone that young, but he has just dropped off dramatically since then, for whatever reason/s.

Like I said this time last year, I also rate his best chance of really making it at AFL level playing that sweeping role across HB that he was playing so well at the end of 2012 and the start of 2012, as it is easier to really dominate across HB than it is to do so across HF, or in the 3rd tall forward role, but that opening across HB looks to have well and truly shut for him now, with Roberton coming in and doing so well there last year and with the acquisitions of Delaney and Bruce likely pushing the likes of Fisher and Dempster and co back to the flanks. So he's now got his work cut out for him to nail down a spot in the side, if he's to do it up forward, especially with his defensive pressure being so ordinary and that being a major focus under Richo. He is one that I could see us putting on the trade table at the end of the year if he doesn't really lift his game.

To be fair to him he's apparently only been back in full training for a few weeks though, so he may have been a bit underdone going into the intra-club game.

Need to play Siposs, Ross, Lee, Stanley, Gilbert, Roberton, Newnes, Acres, Weller and Templeton as early and often as possible.

That's the way I see Seb's career going as well. No real early breakout year, just a slow steady build til it gets to the point where you don't even realize he's regularly having 25+ possessions because it crept up on you. Brad Sewell-like.

That's why I don't agree with those who want to use the rookie list for depth players. We're a developing team, let's keep finding the Currens/Minis/Elis etc. Worry about depth players when we're contending again.

Most probably wouldn't but I'm a big wrap for him. Class user of the ball and goes in hard, I think he has Schneider-like potential.
