The end was quick. Nothing official yet but ALL the Japanese press are reporting it as Toshiba have stopped prodn.

http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetailNews/idUSL1637974620080216

within the last 24hrs WALMART announced that they were discontinuing HD-DVD in their stores.

Earlier this week, NETFLIX (US Quickflix) announced Bu-ray only.

add to this Warner's announcement (which seemed to precipitate all this), Best Buy killing their selling of HD-DVD etc.

Expect Paramount and Universal to announce BR titles soon. Supposedly their movies are appearing on US store ordering software as orderable on BR already.

This may be a stupid thing to say, but no DVDs are being released anymore?
DVDs will be solid for a while yet.

I watched something on Blu Ray the other day. When compared to my HDMI DVD Player I wasn't THAT impressed. There's an improvement but not enough to justify me rebuying things.

Hardly suprising or worth celebrating.

I hardly think Microsoft will be that concerned since their HD solution isn't an integral part of their games console. Sony on the other hand need BR to win badly otherwise PS3 would have been dead.

My viewpoints are clearly expressed in this thread:

Cheers

Expect the price of PS3 to go up. Sony had an awful lot to lose if Blu-Ray lost, and were prepared for some short time pain to see it over the line, which including heavily subsidising the PS3. Now that Blu-Ray's future is assured, Sony will want to reduce the amount of loss it accumulates on the PS3, although they will still make it at a loss.

probably has more to do with your TV.

ahh no...
no chance the price of the PS3 will go up. It will continue to come down.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

The price of the PS3 will continue to fall. It is locked in a contest for HD gaming with the 360 and there is no way that Sony will give MS a free hand by increasing the price.

The PS business was back in the black for Sony last qtr,
and sales of the PS3 have accelerated since it has dropped in price. In fact in the US it outsold the 360 for a variety of reasons in January. It's starting to gain traction in Japan and doing well in Europe. Why would they raise the price?

The main cost drivers for the PS3 have reduced significantly over the last year and will continue to do so. The BR drive was supposedly was supposedly $125 at the start of prodn, it is reputedly down to about $25. The die shrinks for the Cell and RSX are also pulling costs out. The MB redesign that happened with both the 80 and the even more radical design for the 40 also dragged costs out of the machine.

Just like the XBOX 360.;)

No, the Xbox36 is a games console I'm pretty sure.

Console fanboys are bad enough, I can't believe we have digital disc fanboys now.

DVD+R is so much better than DVD-R.

So sick of you DVD-R fanboys!

Much like LCD and Plasma are stop gap TVs?

Haha fairly depressing for Sony to have it's arse kicked by a stopgap. You may be right though, MS will release a new gen console well before Sony, which may well bow out of the market.
Thats the point of a stopgap, and Sony is hardly having it's arse kicked, the figures are showing pretty much on par sales, only thing for Sony is that the PS3 came out 1 year after the 360.

the PS3 has reached 10 million sales worldwide 4 months quicker than xbox 360.
I'd be surprised if total PS3 sales don't surpass xbox 360 in the next 12-18 months. 2008 is going to big for Sony, for PS3 and blu-ray
