After reading the reports of the BnF on Saturday night two things have struck me.

1. It would be the first time since 2001 that Pav has failed to make the top 5 of the BnF. (Possibly even top 4!)

2. None of the big 3: Pav, Sandi and McPharlin made the top ten in a year when we achieved our best results both in terms of wins and eventual finishing position.

I've always been a big believer that they are necessary to win a flag or be a contending team. This result has got me thinking that maybe this is a little overstated.

Bear in mind that our BnF voting rewards players that play a lot of games and all 3 missed big chunks of the year. We did have them at the right time of the year and that undoubtedly contributed to us getting to the GF. I doubt we would have beaten Geelong without Pav and Sandi at least.

McPharlin, Pav, and Sandi in 2014 and we are absolutely no chance for the flag. Lukey is the best defender in the competition. Bold call, but he's overshadowed by a generally solid backline and the deserved praise of Pav.

True they got us there but Lukes injury prevented him from having an impact on the turnover. Infact he turned it over every time he was on his own. One he'd like to forget I reckon.

Yep, most have already said it already. OP has a good point, well noted, but at the business end of the season, Pav and Sandi (especially Sandi) were vital. Elvis was important for structure even if his form was so-so due to injury.

It's clear we're relying on them less, but I'm still a firm believer that you need your best players playing at or near their best when the big stuff is on. Right now, the big three are still considered our best IMHO, though the likes of Fyfe, Mundy and a couple of others are starting to take the load off which is great.

Johnson , Ibbotson and Spurr where the big difference down back this year .
They held their own and then some .
The game plan was the biggest influence on how the team went and everyone bought in to it .
The depth of players within the team to cover injuries was the answer we have been looking for since day one .
Zac Dawson playing in all games also helped .

With cameo's from so called fringe players Clancie , Mzungu , Suban ,Sutcliffe and Clarke ,the future is very bright .
