What's your favourite Bob Marley song???

I'm liking No Woman, No Cry (first heard it belted out enthusiastically by a 26 yr old soccer coach at school- he knew the classics)

Great beat!

Jammin' is a damn sexy song.

But I think my favourite is Exodus.

"War" is another favourite - the lyrics of which were taken from a Haile Selassie speech.

"Until the philosophy which holds one race
Superior and another inferior
Is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned
Everywhere is war, me say war"

Long live Robert Nesta Marley!

And damn you for bringing this subject up - I've just given up the 'ganja' for a while, and here you are encouraging me! :p

My top five (it's hard choosing only five):

Stir It Up -

"Quench me when I'm thirsty
Come and cool me down baby when I'm hot.
Your solky body is so tasty
And you sure can stir my pot."

Wow!

And some great guitar.

Redemption Song - Power and passion.

Satisfy My Soul - Classic Ska "You make me feel like a sweepstake winner".

Exodus: So well put together.

One Love - Great song which whenever I hear it brings toi mind the sight of bitter political rival Edward Seaga and Michael Manley 'united' on stage by Bob.

I like Stir It Up
(I thought it said your recipe is so tasty?)

Africa Unite,
One Love,
Is This Love,
Satisfy My Soul,
Waiting In Vain

I like his love songs more than political

I heard a rumour that Marley died of cancer which was caused by being kicked in the leg during a soccer game. Other people have disputed this. Anyone confirm?

That's how I always understood it.

As far as I know, it was a soccer injury.

He injured his big toe, refused to get treatment for quite a while, and then when it eventually got to the point where the pain was unbearable, he went for treatment only to discover that it had turned cancerous.

The doctors then recommended amputating the entire toe, but Bob refused to do that (it would affect his soccer) and tried to get treatment for it which failed, by which time the cancer had spread.

However, some books I've read about him mention nothing of a connection between the soccer injury and his cancer.

I tend to believe the first story (the soccer toe injury) as I've read that more often.

There are a lot of good Bob songs and it is hard to say one is an out & out favourite. However, 'Could You Be Loved' & Three Little Birds' certainly are happy bouncy tunes that are quite infectious and epitomise the uplifting quality of reggae music.

I also get pumped every time I hear the opening to the live album "And this I want to tell you, is a Trenchtown experience, all the way from Trenchtown Jamaica, Bob Marley & the Wailers, C'MON" they then break into 'Trenchtown Rock' which gets you going !!

If you don't have any of the studio albums, then there are plenty of compilations to wade through in an attempt to get an overview of his stuff. Problem is that it's very easy to find one that really sucks. Probably the most effective way to cover it is by getting the following :

OPTION ONE
Legend
Natural Mystic: The Legend Lives On

*These two are considered to be the two part collection that gives the casual listener all of the radio friendly stuff that most believe essential and throws in a little bit more.

OPTION TWO
Bob Marley & The Wailers Live
Songs Of Freedom (4 disc set)

*If you want to go the full hog, then the 4 disc set gives you everything you ever thought you wanted (includes all of the stuff on the Legend & Mystic) plus much, much more and the live album gives you a good representation of what they were like in concert.

If you enjoy Bob's stuff, have a listen to a Toots & The Maytals compilation or Bunny Wailer's excellent solo album 'Blackheart Man', you won't be disappointed.

Well cover me in eggs and milk and bake me for 20 minutes.

I've just checked a lyrics page and you're correct

"Your recipe, darlin', is so tasty".

I've never even questioned that before, I assumed I was right.

Re the cancer. I understood the injury didn't cause the cancer. When he went to the docs for treatment they discovered it, and it was already too far gone for treatment.

The other story makes for better drama though.

Iron Lion Zion is one of my favourites, Three Little Birds and Stir It Up also get a regular gig in the Cd player.
