Basketball Australia is proud to announce a 17-man Australian Boomers squad, whose players will vie for a place on the national team to compete at the 2007 FIBA Oceania Qualifying Series in August.

The Boomers have to defeat the New Zealand Tall Blacks in that series to qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

“Forget Beijing and forget medalling – we’ve got to qualify first,” Boomers head coach Brian Goorjian said.

“Only the World Champions Spain and the host nation China are guaranteed a spot in Beijing, so I can confidently say that all the other nations are thinking like we are.

“At this point, qualifying is the goal.”

Basketball Australia also invited 21 athletes to attend a Try Out and Development Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in early June as a precursor to the Boomers tour of China in late June.

The athletes that make an impression during that initial camp will be invited into the squad that will attend Boomers Camp 2 on the Gold Coast in mid July.

“The short term goal with the June camp is to find a hidden nugget and to introduce as many people as we can to the Boomer culture,” Goorjian said.

“The medium term goal is to get all the best players aboard and on one page.

“The goal at the end of all this is to have a team that is playing well and, as I said, to qualify against New Zealand.”

The Australia Post Boomers 17-man squad is as follows:

David Andersen (CSKA - Russia)
Chris Anstey (Melbourne Tigers)
Stephen Black (Brisbane Bullets)

The least shambolic squad chosen over the Goorjian era. Huzzah (pardon the pun)

Not bad, but you're alright, this looks one of the stronger Aussie squads we've ever produced, should they all get there. Bogut /Andersen / Mackinnon/ Newley/ Bruton as I've said all along is a top 10 world line-up at full strength.

Good squad, no where near one of the best in the world though.

Having said that, it has potential.

Maybe not on paper, on basis of accomplishments, but if a team featuring that starting 5 (and a full bench) didn't make the top 10 of any FIBA tournament (use the previous World Champs as an example), I would be the first one burning a Goorj effigy in Rundle Mall.

Don't underestimate the impact of a fit David Andersen on that ballclub.

Two important notes: we are currently ranked 10th in the world (rightly or wrongly), finished 13th in the World Champs (without Anstey, Neilsen, Andersen, Saville, Black... and with the handicap of Jason Smith).

But yeah, I'll stop hypothesising while we wait for The Glorious Mills Era.

Whenever a team gets announced we always have this discussion Stiffy, I talk up the Boomers you talk them down, and refuse to give them credit. Andersen is a top 5 in the EuroLeague, Sammy Mac had a fantastic world Champs and then won the MVP/Defencive Player in the NBL and the Title and Newley is coming on in leaps and bounds and will probably be a 2nd round pick....AND Australia are ranked 10th right now in the world, and only 3 points behind Germany, 17 ahead of China.

And thats even with this rating system that basically gives Oceania squat, which I agree it deserves, but we are forced to play.

Ok, on top of this, who aren't we better than at full-strength?

11:China
12: NZL
13: Puerto Rico
14: Angola
15: Canada

Let's not forget the important detail that Goorj is a ***, though.
