How did we all think Bowden played today?

He got heaps of the ball and used it well I thought, but it was a negative ploy to use him as a loose man on the backline. I'd much rather see him earn his kicks instead of lazily floating on the outskirts and waiting for others to do the hard work.

He is capable of winning his own ball so let's see it!

I like him in defence to be honest, he is more accountable and our backline desperately needs the skill boost he brings.

Started the game the way we are all used to seeing dropped 2 marks which resulted in Hawks scoring but to his credit he turned his game around and was clearly in our top 3.

I'm a big Bowden critic but he played well today.

Some others I thought were very good for us were:

Richo... busted his butt today and second efforts were just fantastic to see

Johnson ..... great captains game lead by example wore 17 with pride today

Brown .... needed to do what we paid him to do excellent in my view

Stafford .... we need him fit because Knobel just doesnt cut it and it was only Staff who had any effect against a quality ruckman in Everitt.

The real question was how bad was Kane Johnson.

I cant wait til we drop the loose man in defence and play man on man.

I cant wait til we keep simmonds, cogs, jackson, & tuck in the middle.

Pls give deledio a run onball.

Thank you Pettifer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jezza he didn't have an opponent for much of today mate!

Agree the backline makes him more accountable and his skills are handy, but he needs to pick up a man, not play loose. No cheap stuff!

True, and Hawthorn is probably the only team you would get away with that against. We did seem to be zoning a lot more in defense than playing man on man.

I can't remember seeing a game where Richo chased SO hard. There was one instance where he forced the turnover and we scored a goal. Even though he wasn't having the best of days, he ran like a mule in the desert today. Very impressive.

Will be important for Terry to develop more support for him though, when the Hawks flooded back we reverted to bombing to Richo and he would be badly outnumbered. Simmonds was better around the ground this week, but still not enough of a dominant presence in the forward line. Having Stafford there helps a bit more.

Thought Bowden did well after a dodgy start. I like how he is prepared to take risks and kick the ball to attacking options.

Disagree mate.

He may get 'easy' touches but at the end of the day its still 30 odd uses of the ball. He has wonderful skills and uses the pill well. Personally I think a rebounding CHB/back flank role is where Bowden is at his best and is his best spot for the side. Bowden is good in that role both when playing as the loose man and when he has an person to play on.

I think its similar to the Nathen Brown situation. Whilst they would be good to have in the guts the best for the team is on the flanks.

When we have Schultz back playing on oppision tall; Bowden the rebounding role with Newman and Hartigan running out of the back we look decent.

Thing is Bentleigh, by having him as a loose man in the backline it places more pressure on our forwards, who must be contending with an extra defender up their arrse, and so ultimately, whilst it might look good for Bowden on the state sheet and whilst he may use it well, by the time we get it into the forward line we will more likely than not face turning the ball over becuase of it.

Leave him at HBF, but picking up a man.

Yeah I thought he really struggled, even prior to stuffing his ankle, At one point I even pondered whether he was the only captain in the comp of lesser playing ability than Vandenberg. That last quarter goal got him out of jail to a certain extent, though.

My problem with Richo. (draws breath) Matthew Richardson showed the sort of tenacity in a short burst of five minutes in that last quarter which left me wondering - why the ******** doesn't he play like that all the goddamn time?! His explosiveness to set up the Nathan Brown goal effectively won us a match we were not destined, up until that moment, to win.

I've often wished he'd get reported for whacking someone. It might mean he's becoming a bit more aggressive, and therefore possibly more intimidating to opposition backs. Hell, a bloke of his size and athleticism should have them backing one out in the back pockets.

That Richo doesn't impose himself more readily and more often on contests is something of an indictment on him. Unfortunately he will retire in two or three years a most unfulfilled talent ... unless he starts becoming Wayne Carey or Barry Hall in his own head.

How good is it to have someone like Nathan Brown up forward. He didn't do that much quantity-wise, but it's all such quality. No wonder the Bulldogs supporters still have a bug up their collective arses two years later over his departure.

Just so good to get a win.

Bit harsh on Richo based on the Hawthorn game, I thought he applied himself pretty well the whole game. Just wish he could do it every game.

Very harsh on richo. That was the best game I have seen him play for a while. No SULKING!!!

He expends all of his energy in explosive short bursts. You have to remember that there was 2-3 loose men in defence up until half way through that last quarter when we finally played man on man. The energy richo must expend to make a contest in those conditions is enormous. I think he wants to get up sometimes but is just too stuffed to.

Wallace is experimenting with the playing list and training them to play the style of play that he wants. It will take some time but the pieces will fall into place eventually.

Richo was absolutely fantastic yesterday. Kept us in the game in the 2nd qtr and was busting his ar$e. Ran his guts out. Two of his goals where absolute floaters but they still count thank god. I thought he was easily amongst our best. He's so damn hard for the opposition to match up on up the ground and that trap on the lead and pass to browny in the last qtr was just magnificent.

Best Ruckman we have had since the General.

My oath.

Just a class above Knobel & Simmonds. A better ruckman and does important things around the ground.

Richo was brillant yesterday.

Far be it from me to use an opportunity to start an argument about Wayne Campbell, but you clap him when he's made a career out of the very things you accuse Bowden of doing on the weekend :)

Here, here 1980.

Considering Bowden won a best and fairest, must make him a superstar by Johns logic.

Have to love the inconsistencies.

Right, so Campbell was playing loose man on the ball in the midfield his whole career? Clever bloke he is, never once did the umpire detect us for having a spare man in the centre.

When he finishes 7 times in the top two of the best and fairest, then i'll call him a superstar. Many can have a good year. phuk, even Daffy won a best and fairest, but it takes a great player to back up on that performance and keep that level consistently. Something Wayne Campbell has done. Something Joel Bowden is yet to do. Should he do it, don't worry I'll be the first to champion his cause.
