Two words:
Deportation. Material.

Well Phil Smyth was sacked after losing to New Zealand in 2001. Will Brian Goorgian get the sack after Australia worst performance at an Olympics since Munich 1972.

Goorj should be uncerimoniously dumped from the coaching position. He has made poor decision after poor decisin, including:
1. Encouraging Heal's return to the team and then appointing him captain! Heal is known for playing for one person.....Shane Heal. Every game he plays is about trying to make himself look good regardless of what effect his poor decision making will have on the team. To then have him as point guard is just plain dumb!
2. Brett Maher. How can you keep your best shooting player on the bench while your other guard throws poor shots from way beyond his range? It might be forgivable if Maher was having trouble after overcoming his back injury, but in every minute he has played so far he has shown that he is in great form.......get him on the court. As for Bruton over Maher.......well we all know what Goorj has for brains don't we.
3. Ronaldson. Can anyone explain how Ronaldson made it onto the squad? He's struggling to get on the court in the NBL! Hell if he can make it why don't we bring back Rupert Sapwell (at least he might bank a few threes) or Chris Blakemore?!
4. John Rillie. Does he have the plague? He has been anchored to the end of the bench for that long I'm not sure he remembers why he is in Athens. For god's sake Goorj, the blokes a shooting freak get him on the court!
5. Paul Rogers. If he is only going to sit on the bench why put him in the team? It would have been better experience for Schencher. On the other hand, with him on the court, we could use his size and bulk in D, but having him in the squad and on the bench makes no sense.

I'm sorry folks but the Sydney focussed Basketball Australia didn't realise they had the best coach in the country in charge before (Smyth) and so won't notice the poor efforts of the God like Goorj!

The losses to Puerto Rico and the US were more related to a lack of quality players than a coaching mistake.Since Gaze left we haven't really had that scoring freak that can step up in a clutch situation and score when the team seems to have dried up.We barely scored in the last quarters against those two sides and it was because we lacked that star quality.

Wrong. Sure, we may not have someone of Gaze's calibre, but John Rillie and Brett Maher shat all over CJ Bruton in this department. To have the best 2-guard in Australia, and to not start him let alone have him the rotation, is a joke of epic proportions.

Unfortunately Goorjian is going to get away with the inexperience excuse. I wonder how many NBL games Maher, Rillie, Cattalini and Rogers have between them... a few championships there too.

I might be a bit biased, but ..um........Phil Smyth?!! He is an outstanding coach (better than Gorj). Check Smyth's records, they are excellent in the NBL (even operating under a salary cap that Gorj never has to worry about). As for international experience, apart from Gaze, does anyone have more than Smyth? And you can't question his international coaching either. He took a group of young players to NZ (none of the other 'stars' wanted to play, another reason Heal should not have been appointed captain!) and lost 1-2 in an away series to a team that finished 5th at the World champs! Even with the weakened team it was a fair result and better than finishing 10th as we are about to.
I've never been a fan of Gorj, probably because I hated his walking on the court every 2 minutes antics at 36ers games, but these games have proven once and for all that he is overrated as a coach.

Bit OTT maybe? He's hardly struggling to get court time in NBL.

Ok maybe a little :D and the Blakemore/Sapwell reference was meant as tongue-in-cheek, but you have to wonder how he made the team. I doubt anyone thinks he is in the best 10 players we currently have in Australia!

Agreed. I'm a Wildcats fan and I don't really rate him that highly. I lost a fair bit of respect for him when he started wearing that stupid headband.

They sacked Smyth after he had been coaching for 30 seconds with a team that just started rebuilding cos Gaze and Badtke were gone

Goorjian has had his chance and he's given us our worste finish in 32 years. On yer bike

His treatment of Brett Maher is a disgrace. He's one of Australia's top guards of all time and he gets treated like he's Brett Rainbow.

Brett Maher is an unselfish Shane Heal. He should have been a starter and the captain

Congratulations The Flying Egg! You've hit the nail on the head with that peice of wisdom. Maher would have been a much better choice for captain. He is a better player than Heal, he is unselfish and he is a great leader.
It will be interesting to see what the response to Gorj will be, but I'm already hearing in the news the...."if only we had him"..... or "if only they weren't injured".....excuses. Funny how they didn't appear after the NZ series

I used to think Ronaldson was a pretty decent player and hated the sixers playing against him in the playoffs, but his day has been and gone. There are many better players running around that would have warrented selection ahead of him. Oh and don't be too harsh on the headbands, they're making a come back!! :D

Don't forget Goorj's customary 'Thing and Man' comments in every sentence!
:D :D
