Some interesting points about these stats...

He kicked 109 goals 31 points. An amazing 77% accuracy.
He averaged only 6.3 shots at goal per game kicking an average of 4.95 goals per game.
He had 140 shots for goal. Phil Matera had 103 shots for goal but only kicked 61 goals 42 points at 59% accuracy.
Brad Smith never in a single game kicked more points than he did goals. He had several games where he kicked 7.0, 6.1, 6.0, 6.1, 5.2, 5.0, 6.1
The most shots he had for goal in a single game were 10 where he kicked 7.3

I was told he is one of the best kicks for goal in Australia and I think these stats prove it... It also shows that it wasn't like he kicked 100 goals from 180 shots... he was consistent in every game from the limited opportunities he got.

Who knows what he could do in an Eagles jumper with hopefully better service from the midfield. If anything what he does bring is a key forward who is capable of kicking 4 goals a game from only 4 or 5 kicks which is something we have lacked.

interesting post mate. Thanks for providing the stats n comparisons. Should be great to see how smith goes this year. Hopefully he can kick 50+

You should see a big improvement in the Eagles goalkicking accuracy with the appointment of Murray Couper as goal kicking coach.

very interesting TP. the more i think about it, the more i feel we should play him FF from round 1. his leading and sticky hands on the lead, combined with the first class service from our midfield and his finishing skills should make him a potent target.

Muzza will have Doogs kicking style ironed out by the start of the new season and Matera should be a lot more accurate as well. Don't discount Doogs for round 1 just yet.

I'm not surprised, you hardly see him miss many shots on goal. It will be interesting to see how Brad goes when it comes to a pack marking scenario at AFL level. That said he is very very good on the lead.

i think doogs would be better off away from the confines off FF anyway. play more of a floating forward would be better for him IMO. doogs is certainly in our best 22.

Regardless of whether smith starts at FF or mcdougall does, this pick up will produce competition, which is always good.

Mcdougall won't 'coast' through games knowing he'll be there next week regardless of his performance, which will mean they'll both be hungry and determind to give 100% and therefore resulting in much better outcomes.

I dont think thats such a bad thing... we have enough big guys who can sit in the square and take pack marks... even more so if we could get Gaspar playing :( Smith is exactly what we need... a leading forward with good hands who will straighten us up

Yeah I agree actually... Couper told a mate of mine that he had the Eagles in his first training session do the most basic drill where they had to kick in a straight line..... he was absolutely staggered at how bad they were. Couper could be the best signing the Eagles make in the off season.

I think that with him ironing out their technique at kicking for goal it will have a flow on effect with less floaters being kicked and more targets being hit.

I think your all getting a bit premature on Smith. He isnt a huge bloke from what I understand so he wont be like Wilson. Wilson came in and wasnt bothered by anyone because he was well and truly in his weight division. Smith is a little bit undersized is he not?

Not to mention, he will be playing on a lot of different grounds and he will also be experiencing the travel factor for the first time. WAFL to AFL is a huge jump and I think a lot of you are expecting that he will come in and be a star and kick 60?? I think that is very unlikely.

Alot of you are also saying Doogs will have competition and may not start come round 1. I guarantee McDougall will be in the starting 18 come round 1 barring injury.

Lets all not get ahead of ourselves here.

News to me - last time I checked Smith was 193cm and 100kg.

Can Muzza do heart transplants as well??

Didnt take long for the Kangaroos supporters to get cut up over the fact we got the decent Le Cras and they got the crab :D

Never mind mate... its easier to transplant a heart than it is to transplant a heartbeat into a dying club. You should really think about becoming an Eagles supporter when the Kangaroos fold in say 3 or 4 years.

He's not exactly small.... and this fallacy that Troy Wilson was this huge strong monster... was nothing short of crap. Wilson may have had bulk but the only way he knew how to use it was to collect someone in a straight line.... when it comes to body on body play Wilson was not strong at all and was regularly beaten man on man.

I dont think anyone is suggesting that McDougalls position in the team is under threat.... and if they are they are dreaming. The kid has barely played 30 games and he should be given at least another 3 years until we see him at his potential. Personally I still dont think McDougall is a Full Forward. He was a Full Forward last year by need more htan anything else. He is your floating CHF role that Reiwoldt plays where he can roam up the ground and get the ball with his athleticism.

Again I ask everyone on here... Who in the current Eagles team would have been capable of kicking 100 goals in the WAFL this year from Full Forward? My guess is nobody... so thats why Smith is already ahead of McDougall for the FF spot.

great call. Also agree on ur call regarding doogs. He is a perfect floating CHF and i like the comparison with Riewoldt. Of course he is not as good(yet) but should still play the same role.

Agree with that. Smith is a natural FF and proven goal kicker - he should get first opportunity to prove himself in the preseason games. McDougall should either play CHF or forward pocket depending on where Gardiner lines up.

A lot of Smith's success at Subi is down to the delivery he was getting. That is the area that the coaching staff should be concentrating on, because for the last 2 seasons we have sucked at it.

Our problem has been our main focus has been Phil Matera on the lead.. and the problem Matera has is that he leads to much to the boundary line and unless we put it on his chest he gets beaten by sides who play bigger players on him.... McDougall was better in the air but tends to make all his leads towards the boundary line.... and McDougall said it himself he gets frustrated at Full Forward with a guy always holding onto him and just punching all the time. We need a natural Full Forward who knows how to play and can straighten up the team the way Scott Cummings did when he came to the club.
