Spent a couple of thou and picked up:

* Tsunami Dream Thermaltake case
* 19" Mitsubishi Diamondtron (luvverly flat screen)
* P4 3.0GHZ (with h/t)
* 1GB Geil DDR ram
* 200GB SATA drive (to add to 120GB and 60GB ATA drives)
* ASUS V9999 vid card
* 12x DVD/CD burner
* A warm fuzzy feeling.

About $2600 all up I think. {Edit: I tell a lie. About $2300 - there was another case and other stuff for another comp on that invoice.}

Pretty good considering my first PC purchase was a PIII 133 machine with a 2MB graphics card and cost $3000 :)

My first comp was a 286. A real rocket at the time - 20MHZ with a 40Mb H/D.
Cost about $3000. :)

Ummm.. There aren't THAT many video cards on the market better than mine. The two or three that are better cost about $1k, but $700-$750 or so was my psychological limit on a video card. This thing is basically a huge heat sink and requires two power supply connections just on its own. I crank up to Ultra High video setting, anistropic filtering and anti-aliasing in Doom3 and it doesn't blink.

Huh? A PIII 133? Something seems very wrong here.

(My first PC was a 286 running at 16Mhz, with 4Mb of memory. Can't remember what size disk it had, although I recall I had a machine with a 40Mb disk at one stage)

*drool!!!* I wish my system could do that! The only component I've got matching yours is the new motherboard I've just put in - P4P800-E Deluxe ;). My 2.4 GHz (with hyperthreading) processer, GeForce4 Ti 4800SE and 512 MB DDR 400 doesn't have a hope in hades of running the Ultra High setting unfortunately.

Why did you go the soon-to-be discontinued Socket 478 when you could have gone the socket 775 with 915 chip architecture and DDR2???
There was a reason, I'm sure. I think price was a consideration given the lifespan of the machine - I'll just get a new one in a year or two and pass this one on to a family member.

Yeah mine is the deluxe with the WiFi card included etc. Dunno what I'll DO with the WiFi card. Haven't even installed it. I want to get a wireless network card for the Vaio laptop and put that in the lounge for web surfing and e-mail when I can't be stuffed to go downstairs to the office. Unfortunately the baby would probably just destroy it and my wife has put her foot down about having a "bloody computer in the lounge room, as if you don't spend enough time in front of computers...".

On that point, I hope you didn't get a wireless keyboard and mouse, they will quickly disappear.

And your planning on getting rid of your PC in a year!!! Geez, which I could afford to do that on such a regular basis.

Iv'e had a P4 3Ghz with 800 fsb and 1GB RAM for about 8 months... and an FX 5900 Ultra...
It's not a bad card, but you do get what you pay for. I payed about $1000 when I got mine about 8 months back.

Just bought a new machine.

3500XP 64 CPU
Asus A8V Motherboard - 939 Pin
1GB Corsair XL2 Ram (the fastest ram around at the moment).
200GB Seagate SATA 8MB Buffer
Pioneer 108D DVD Burner (16x Burn)
Audigy 1 sound card.

gfx card not upgraded at moment, but getting a 6800 GT soon.

Apologies if I get some model numbers worng, off the top of my head.

Usually get into maps on CS : S about 3 seconds before any one else. Im happy :)

Well I'm like you, I really have no need for the WiFi card just at the moment. I put it in, though, but am going to take it out this weekend. After I installed it, I found that when I switched on my PC and windoze loaded, it took about five to ten minutes for the WiFi to come online, and while this was happening I couldn't actually do anything. As soon as I removed the software the computer loaded up in a flash.

So I'm going to take it out this weekend and replace it with my new TV Tuner chip :)
