Band was discussed to some depth in the BDO thread, but given the popularity I thought I'd create a new thread.

Great band IMO, in and outside of the genre.

Jesse Lacey is a lyrical genius too.

One of the best bands on the planet right now. Amazing evolution from a pretty standard pop-punk band (who still did have better and more intelligent lyrics than a lot of their peers in their early days) to what they've become now.

The only viable reason I can think of as to why the don't have a larger audience is that their lyrics are a bit dark and their songs can be seen as somewhat depressing and not exactly full of made-for-radio pop hooks (although many of their tracks are quite catchy), and that kind of stuff isn't for everyone.

I can't wait until their new album Daisy comes out next month :D

They are a great band indeed and their progression is probably the best thing about them.
They went from young guys who didn't really play their instruments well in You + Your favourite weapon to a good band with deja entendu to a lyrical and musically brilliant album with Devil and God. I saw them when they played in Perth a while back, which was their last show before a hiatus.

I like that they took the hiatus, it gives them a chance to cool their heels and reform for another album and the song I have heard from that so far sounds great.

Hope they tour again soon

I think there brilliant,

My favourite section of a song by them would have to be;

So, is that what you call a getaway?
Tell me what you got away with.
Cause I've seen more spine in jellyfish.
I've seen more guts in eleven-year-old kids.
So spine tingling when it's just the bass and Jesse.

As for why there not more popular, I think thats as much about marketing and publicity these days as it is the music.

Do people really care about how dark lyrics are anymore?

It's so funny that you say that..
Without going into detail, I wrote a review for the new album, and the label requested that it was pulled down for some lame reason. Pathetic.
The review is still up! It's on the bombshellzine website if anyone is interested.

Anyway, the album is great. It's much more aggressive then previous efforts.

Just read that review, really looking forward to Daisy. Doesn't have to be as good as TDAGARIM to be a pretty damn fine album.

Interesting that Jesse didn't do as much of the writing for this album and that the lyrics are noticeably different apparently. Always liked Jesse's lyrics but I'll wait until I hear it before I judge whether its a good or bad thing.

Absolutely amazing band. Jesse writes some of the finest lyrics on the planet.

Their music is so varied with stuff ranging from Sic Transit through to Tommy Gun. My personal favourite is still Degausser because I think it's so different to most other music out there.

Would love to see them live

Yeh Vin wrote most of the lyrics for this album. Judging by At The Bottom it won't be lyrically as good as Jesse.

For someone who's into this band, could you reccomend me a few songs to start with
cheers

I'd say listen to it all from start to finish

start with their first album and finish with their last, you will appreciate them so much more

but if you just want a few tracks then here are some

Your Favourite Weapon
Jude Law & A Semester Abroad
Seventy Times 7

Deja Entendu
Sic Transit Gloria.... Glory Fades
Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't
The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows
Play Crack The Sky

The Devil & God Are Raging Inside Me
Sowing Season
Jesus
Limousine
Handcuffs

just a few personal preferences

Bought a Bride and In a Jar prob my 2 favourite tracks off the new album so far.

At first glance, I don't think it's as good as their previous work, but I'll need to listen to it a few times over.

Love BN, my fave band by far!

Just a general question to everyone, how long did it take you to fall in love with The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me?

It took me a good 4 or 5 listens IIRC, was this the same for anyone else?

Not long at all I reckon.

I think it took longer to get into YFW and DE.

I'm from the group of Brand New fans that listened to YFW back when it was released.

So my opinion is slightly skewed to YFW being the best.

For this reason, Jude Law and Seventy Times 7 will always be there best songs. If you like Seventy Times 7, then *Obvious Alert* You may be interested in listening to Taking Back Sunday's "There's No I in Team."

It is after all, the reason why Jesse created Brand New.

The new album sounds very TBS-Esque I reckon.

I much prefer TDAG though... His song writing on that album is just captivating...

I'm listening to Daisy pretty thoroughly now.

It's definitely different again but that's what you'd come to expect from the band. Some stuff is harder and then there's the classic melancholy that Jessie does so well.

I like it but it will never surpass DE and TDAG. I've basically worn those two albums out.
