CARLTON has confirmed former Brisbane rookie, Irishman Brendan Quigley, will not be joining the Blues in 2008.
Quigley, 21, was in talks with Carlton about the possibility of being selected as an international rookie.
The Blues were informed by the AFL on Friday that Quigley’s status as a former international rookie would not affect his ability to sign with the club but, in the end, time was the problem.
Quigley was locked into an apprenticeship as an electrician until November 30 leaving insufficient time for him to complete a trial before the NAB AFL Rookie Draft on December 11.
“The bottom line is he’s not going to come, there’s just not enough time in between when he’d be available to come and the rookie draft, which is Tuesday week,” Carlton’s football operations manager Stephen Icke said.
Icke said the Blues encouraged the Gaelic footballer to finish his apprenticeship because all that was on offer at Carlton was a trial, not a contract.
“We didn’t want to turn his life upside down on a whim and a prayer,” Icke said.
Quigley was an international rookie with the Brisbane Lions in 2006 and returned to Ireland after only a few months because of homesickness.
The Blues’ recent signing of Cork native Michael Shields also limited Quigley’s chances to be part of the senior list.
“Based on the fact that Michael Shields excelled and was able to pick up the game quicker than we had anticipated and the fact that Brendan had locked into his apprenticeship, which we had encouraged him to do, meant that we just didn’t have enough time,” Icke said.
However, Icke did not rule out Quigley joining the club in the future.
“We haven’t planned for it but anything’s possible. He won’t be too old next year, he’s only 21 and rookies need to be under 23,” he continued.
“A lot of things can change in six months or 12 months so I’m not going to speculate other than we’ll continue to watch Brendan’s progress and keep in contact with him.”

Time was the issue for Brendan Quigley, do you think it was the right decision? Wasn't he a KPP?
