Another one of those much maligned players at times (of whom I have to admit I have been one of the critiics) but T-Bird really played a gem of a game tonight and provided much needed courageous marks and leadership from the back half tonight ...

I get the feeling Thornton's worked his arse off on the training track in the past few months and now he's getting the rewards for all his hard work.

Probably 2nd BOG tonight behind Gibbs in my opinion...

And he is the only 'Bret' I know of who spells his name with one 'T' !!! :D

Agree with most of this... I used to really think Thorton was crap, but seriously he has improved so much and is now solid and reliable most of the time.

Have to think Judd is up there top 3 mate though. Hard ball gets saved our ass early on!

It's a pity this guy had to play during our worst period as a club, as basically our only defender. For most of his career he has had to take the big no1 forward when he is clearly suited to the role he is playing now.

He has been fantastic this year and would be up there in the top 3 or 5 in the B and F.

He was outstanding, he really has been consistently brilliant for several games now. I reckon he has shone up to being in the top 3 defenders in the competition. I guess his job was a lot easier with Geelong's non-existant forward line.

A Thornton thread .... he couldn't make an appearance could he? Where is his biggest fan? I admire his ability to turn positives into negatives and point out how T-Bird almost lost us the game. That's dedication.

Might be hard pressed this week however. Thornton is starring and seeing some of the things he does, I have to wonder how many other defenders are as capable. He may not be Scarlett elite but he is definitely on the next rung down with plenty behind him.

He gives the match committee options as he can play that loose defender reading the play and setting up, but more importantly if a player starts getting out of hand they can rely on him to shut them down. I reckon he is a gun and going forward look forward to him getting All Australian honours.

Just looking at some of his stats for the season and for his 340 disposals, his disposal effectiveness is at 90.29%

And to think some people were calling for his head

That was just for Halloween. Otherwise the boy is going good.

Actually, I've got a real problem here - I've always been a huge fan of Thornton because:

  • He was a low pick
  • From the early time of his development he was playing on top forwards in an undermanned backline during our darkest days and he almost always gave 110%, and
  • For much of his career the ball has been bombarded into a backline that would've felt like the final days of Berlin at the end of World War 2. Thornton often got blamed when it was poor midfield pressure in not stopping the ball being bombarded down.

But because CP is now praising him, I feel I cannot agree

Sigh, there is always some posters out there who'll use any excuse to try and give another poster an 'sledge' ...

Posts and thinly veiled insults like that, do not to improve the quality of this board.

I have been accused and bagged in the past for being too 'negative' (and probably fair enough) but now when I try and acknowledge and give credit where it's due, I still get canned ...

CP, I only wrote the post in gest, and will "edit" it if you want

No offence meant at all

I actually think it's great you can change your thoughts on a player that you once thought different about.

Ah okay fair enough, truth be told, I have been copping a bit of flaming after that ridiculous thread i posted about being happy with a 5 goal loss :D, and yeah Kramer took me to task before, so I'm a bit precious/sensitive right now, but I appreciate the clarification :)

Thorton played his best game ive seen . the defence showed some real inprovement something that has been needed. the win means nothing tho if we lose to port next week

Yes, well said. I have noticed he has cut the Travis-Cloke-like hissy fits out of his game, and concentrates much better now. Outmarked Fatty Hawkins on numerous occasions last night, and used the ball well out of defence. Did a few great spoils on Mooney as well. At 25 yo, he is our senior defender, and his leadership is just crucial with Waite and Jamo out. :)
