I think you're seriously underestimating Bowie, and seriously overstating the impact of Damon Albarn.

I'm not underestimating Bowie, he's a bonafide music legend, and I'm not saying Damon Albarn is as good as him or has had the same impact as him, I'm just saying there are are similarities in the way Albarn has reinvented himself a number of times over his career.

They just happened to come to fame during the mid 90s Britpop era and they got lumped in with that lot along with the whole Oasis v Blur battle which was mostly fueled by the UK music press and the Gallagher brothers mouthing off to get attention. Damon Albarn never engaged in all that nonsense.

That statement is nonsense.

Yeah musical comparisons are as daft as "he's a lot like a young Stevie J..." on draft day.

Why can't you just say he's covered plenty of territory in 25 years. And Albarn has. And not just in a guitar-spectrum, he's gone gospel, west African, to stage producer, rap-infused, atmospheric electronica, to balladry. Some of that work is bad, some of it's just forgettable, and some is pretty special. He doesn't need to be compared to anyone just like Alex Turner isn't the new Dylan or whatever they're throwing out. Are people that lazy?

it is fun though to kinda compare career arcs, similarities, influence and all that.
Albarn is more david byrne than bowie. the african thing. electronic influences at a later stage.
talking heads brought eno in to shake it up. i guess blur had orbit.. they Love a collab to.

90's Britian produced some insanely good music whatever the genre

Aside from Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Radiohead, Supergrass, Stone Roses

Among my favourites were

Catherine Wheel - Ferment, Chrome
Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque, Grand Prix, Songs from Northern Britian, Howdy
The Verve - Storm in Heaven, A Northen Soul
Ride - Nowhere, Going Blank Again
Slowdive - Souvlaki

and this amazing little gem

The first 6 tracks on Against Perfection are all great tunes (and the remaining 4 would be many other similar band's best work). A number of my mates love "Homeboy" but I always liked "Sistine Chapel Ceiling" and "Favorite Fallen Idol" more.

Fake wasn't too bad a follow-up but, like The Stone Roses' second album, it just couldn't match the debut.

Great call sir.

All about Crash Sight for me. Kind of a bit cheesy or something but I do love the intensity in it, like they're so intent on making the song say what it was supposed to. Homeboy's still my favourite though.

That bridge with the "shiver at the..." is pretty special. It's not an especially interesting or obtuse bit of poetry but it's nice enough in their closest attempt to a pop song.

I need to go back and listen to it again, it has been a while since I gave it a spin but I do remember how much I liked the first 6 songs.

I also recall "Sunshine Smile" and "I'll Be Your Saint" being pretty handy but they never made it onto either album.

Yeah, I really need to go and listen to them again.

Not really a Britpop band but nice to stumble over some fellow fans of theirs.
