Hearing he's got stress fractures, hence why he's been set back to 8weeks recovery.

“@SamLandsberger: Pies ruckman Brodie Grundy - the steal of last year's draft - is still at least two months away. Battling stress fractures in his lower back”

This blokes reliable ive found, hasn't been 'formally announced' on the pies page yet..

I'm not concerned about this. Put him on light duties for the year, work on his skills and fitness base where possible and groom him for the future.

edit - He could work as our car park Cop when he's not at training or rehab. It's obviously a sorely needed role.

Well...nature abhors a vacuum...

So, while young and immensely talented Grundy is allowed to heal in due course, Witts has abundant opportunity to step up and gain AFL boot on leather time.

By the bye...

We know that Grundy has stress fractures...and that Broomhead has glandular fever...but what is the situation with Ramsay?
Not sure about Ramsey Mungo I walked past him as he was leaving training yesterday and didnt have any strapping etc so its a mystery

To be honest, doesn't bode well for the long term.

Stress fractures even in the FEET can end careers, but in the back? on a young ruckman no less? I know this will sound terrible, but it almost sounds like they should cut their losses now.

Theyre actually really common in athletes Spesh.. if im not mistaken Witts suffered some similar issues as an 18 year old (someone can confirm). 6 weeks of rest with progressive increases in exercise and physio management and he'll be right as rain

Oh good.

Showing my age then. I remember Daicos' career effectively ended by them, and James Hird basically needed a year off.

He had a good run.

It sucks to hear, especially considering he's only young. Although he wasn't likely to play much this year anyway, still slows his development a little bit. I'm sure I'm not the only one wishing him a speedy recovery!

I'm not sure about Witts but stress fractures can be recovered from, definitely easier the younger you are too. Lots of growing young athletes get them in all kinds of places. I think feet is almost the worst though because they have a constant load.

Yeah i remember an article stating that Witts had been restricted to very few games due to stress fractures caused by his amazing growth spurt and the amount of weight he put on. With Grundy exploding in size within the last 12-18 months (weight not height in this instance) it kinda fits.

So all in all, not too concerned. Just want to see him playing some solid VFL footy at some stage this season

Stress fractures can be extremely annoying to get right, but in the vast majority of cases if he gets 2-3 months off heavy duty stuff then gradually builds back up to it he'll be fine and i'm hoping to see him play the 2nd half of the VFL season

Extremely common in rapidly growing teenagers. In older athlete's it is certainly of far greater concern.

There's a young Aussie tennis player who is currently struck down by it. A supremely talented kid who will thankfully be taking the mantle from Tomic as our best player in a few years, as he's much more talented. 6'3 and growing though and battling his second bout of it at 16. A number of other well known athletes were struck down by it as teens.

The important thing is it's treated correctly. Once they stop growing and the bones fuse, if they haven't stuffed the treatment up they should be fine.
