GOLD Coast defender Greg Broughton has announced his retirement and will get a farewell game at the SCG against the Sydney Swans on Saturday night.

Broughton travelled a less traditional road to the AFL but will still eke out a 110-game career at both Fremantle and Gold Coast.

The 28-year-old was a triple premiership player in the WAFL before the Dockers punted on him at pick No.79 in the 2009 AFL Draft.

For a bloke who probably never thought he would get this much of a shot, he took it very well while at Freo. One of my favourites when I was younger. All the best in retirement!

My fondest memories of Broughts would have to be caning Steve Johnson in that epic 2010 game as well as kicking the first goal in the elim against the Hawks. Set shot that just snuck in, I'm not sure betting agencies even had him as an option for first goal.

Good off either foot, solid as defensively and could seriously find the footy. Unfortunately just too slow for modern footy. All the best Greg.

I find it almost impossible to fave ill-feelings towards players who always gave 100% regardless of their skill level, hence why I loved Broughton when he played for us

Didn't get to watch him much when he played for Gold Coast, but all the best in retirement either way Broughts :thumbsu:

Yep, brave player and for a while there, was one of most consistent and reliable players.

Other than the Steve J bath, my fondest memories will always be the way he stood his ground while a pack or a forward on a lead was baring down on him and more often than not he'd still take the grab. A bit like Robbie Haddrill in that respect.

I enjoyed his game in the WAFL GF pitted against Yarren too. Whilst he was much slower he still negated him beautifully. That performance probably sealed the deal for him to get drafted I'd say as we took him about 6 weeks later.

Quality research from afl.com again. He was pick 74 in the 2008 rookie draft, about 150th overall from that draft
I would assume that he was promoted the year later at 79 then?

Always liked Broughton and wasn't happy when we traded him (even though it's worked out the best for Freo in the end).

Wish the bloke all the best in the future.
Not 100% sure yet. Tanner Smith was the draft pick and he's holding on by the skin of his teeth at the minute. I wonder if he'll get a game this week?

I remember he had a really good year in 2011, putting on some strong performances in the midfield while half the team was injured. Broughton finished 3rd in the Doig behind Pav and Fyfe that year.

Now could he do us a favour and tag Hannebery out of the game this week?

He was a terrific defender for us for a while there. My dependable, always did his job, always used the ball well, cool head.
Staggered when we let him go really.

In fairness, Lee Spurr is a pretty clear upgrade. Only looks respectable in hindsight though and I was also annoyed at the time. Harvey playing funny buggers with his role didn't help either.

Spurr is a terrific player but I think Broughton had him covered for using the ball.

I won't disagree there, Broughton is/was a lovely kick. That said, I don't think Spurry is terrible by foot by any means, produces the odd flour bag sure but not the turnover merchant some would have you believe.

Its a close call and Broughton could do ok in the guts to.

Just on that, I remember Spurr was played as a utility for Centrals. Regularly played not only in the middle but up forward too. Clearly found his niche as a back pocket in the big league but one of these days I wouldn't mind seeing how he goes a little further up the ground.

Yeah versatility is all the rage these days. Would be cool to see.

I guess it was obvious to see. He was delisted last year and then barely played this season in a very average Suns side, but he did well for himself and got some good years and plenty of very good games for Freo in his time. Always used to like him as a kid even though he seemed as thick as two planks.

Good on him, hope he goes well for Subi in the WAFL next year.

He took a chest mark opposed to SJ in that last qtr in the the type of situation that would make any defender shudder. Critical moment in the game, isolated, ball dropping straight down on the contest, what a brilliant mark that was. A few moments later he was caught at the true CHF position in a carbon copy contest. I think he may have dropped that mark, or maybe spoiled the mark, but the ball was swept away. That's how I remember it anyway, I have never re-watched it because for some weird reason they are my 2 favourite memories from 20 odd years of supporting Freo and I'd hate to discover that they are false memories.
Yes I know there have been more significant events throughout the course of Freo's history, but those 2 contests, in the context of that game and in that year, man they were something. For me personally I felt that game catapulted us on the journey we now find ourselves on. Sometimes you don't fully comprehend the significance of an event until many years later, but after that game I experienced one of my rare moments of lucidity. This was a different Fremantle. Thanks Greg for those wonderful memories.

(PS: if my memories of that game are in any way inaccurate, please don't tell me.) ;)
