Also I forgot that Lockett kicked 6. For some reason I kept thinking he did nothing. Well, it was 13 years ago.
Yeah, I thought the same until I watched the 1996 GF again last year.

My guess is that 6 goals was pretty much an average game for Lockett, unlike today where 6 goals for a key forward is a big haul.

Too used to Lockett kicking bags of 10 :D
Yeah, looking at his 1996 stats, he kicked 10 goals against North earlier that year in Melbourne, and Sydney thrashed them. I guess the expectation was that if Sydney were to win he'd have to do the same.

It was a pretty good match when I viewed it again. Much closer than the final margin suggested - North piled on the goals at the end when the Swans knew the game was shot.

Couldn't understand why Archer got the Norm Smith though.

The slime had a rolls royce midfield which fed an average forwardline and
assisted a "reasonable backline".

Gravy is on the money 6-7 Agraders in the midfield and your 80% there.

The midfield is just about made up of 13 players on the ground. You have four KPPs and a ruck, and you might have a reserve ruck and another three mids on the bench.

All in all, in a best 22, 16 midfielders is pretty much the requirement. You'd need a few athletic talls like Mackie, but he is still generally more in the midfield mold than the KPP mold.

Geelong won a premiership with only one genuine first class KPP, Matt Scarlett. They had about 6-7 first class mids. To me, that shows the value of KPPs versus mids.

Very, very true.

Even the reserve ruck isn't essential though. Ultimately, you'd prefer a guy like Ottens who plays as a KPF so you can have an extra running player.
