Will he qualify for veterans status? Meaning he will be counted outside of senior list, which will mean 5 senior spots to fill?

Yes he does but we don't gain two list spots for Robertson being delisted and Bruce going to the Veterans list like some people have mistakenly thought (Not directing this at you).

We gain only one list spot for both of Bruce going from the Senior list to the Veterans list and Robbo being delisted.

Wheatley = Pick #1
Whelan = Pick #2
McLean = Pick #11
Robertson/Bruce = Pick #18
Buckley = Pick #34/PSD #1

Valenti = 1 rookie list spot

So yes we have 5 senior spots and a rookie spot to fill currently, although could be another two rookie spots to fill when hopefully Zomer and Spencer get the arse.

Notwithstanding who we end up getting in the ND or PSD but surely Hughes goes before Spencer.

I agree with RandB.

Spencer may be pretty unco but we still need some backup ruckmen and he's not the worst going around when it comes to centre bounces.

Hughes, on the other hand, is just an average half forward who has never come close to getting a game in our seniors. Regardless of whether Spencer is delisted, I'd give Hughes the chop too.

Spencer needs to be upgraded to the senior list (God I hope not) or pissed off because he's had his 2 years on the rookie list whereas Hughes has only spent one year on the rookie list and still has another one to go.

So, why?

Besides Hughes has talent, Spencer does not.

Hughes has previously been on the list so it would be his 3rd year. Had a 1 year hiatus due to injuries and the club decided that it would be best to give him a year when he was fully fit to proove himself.

Spencer is a project player who the club can attempt to re-rookie if they wish if they don't upgrade him. He is competing against two others for his spot. Jamar is our 1st ruck, Meesen is no guarantee to be a solid contributor and has played a handful of games and PJ faded out last year pretty significantly. Given our ruck stocks it would be a bit of a luxury to cull a 203cm project player when our other rookies are absolutely redundant. This doesn't mean that we shouldn't look to get another ruckman on our list somewhere in the draft though.

Hughes is 23, has shown nothing and is competing against more players for a spot in the team. The mere fact that Valenti got the ass says something about how competitive spots will be going forward. I realise Hughes has only had 1 year in his current stint (unlike the others) but what is his actual use to the team? McKenzie is touch and go for a senior spot yet is miles ahead of Hughes.

Hughes has to be gone. If he couldn't manage to get a game this year he never will

He should have got a game this season though, had a string of very good form with Casey but didn't get upgraded to the senior list for some strange reason when we had enough players on the LTI to do so.

Unfortunately he was struck down by a hip injury as well later on, however he definitely should have got a few games this season.

Baffles me as to why people want him gone and want Spencer kept, even with our average ruck stocks we should pick up a ruckman in this draft that would offer more than Spencer straight off the bat.

Ahead of which other rookie?

Spencer is and always will be a project player ie long term. If we get a half decent ruckman in the draft then sure Spencer is on thin ice but given PJ and Meesen are not proven to be long term certainties (at this stage) we lose nothing by re-rookieing Spencer. To not re-rookie him simply to keep an extra rookie spot for Hughes or to argue in that context is even more baffling. Hughes will be 24 next year and have no senior experience what so ever and will be competing with about 10 other players for a spot. He is redundant.

If we can re-rookie him under the 3rd year rookie rule however it works then fair enough, but ffs no senior list upgrades please.
I think the club would be pretty happy to have him simply re-rookied - the only possible risk as I understand it is losing him in the ND but very, very slim. He is a project player and should be treated as such. If he is needed he can be elevated if 1 of the others goes down during the season.

FWIW if we were going to upgrade a rookie I would hope it would be McKenzie before Spencer anyway.

Spence should be kept is a similar size to Dean Cox and he certaintly didnt play AFL as a 20 year old. We have to be patient with him, im happy with his current output having played AFL already, give him another pre-season and hopefully we will start seeing the benefits.
