old age may have turned my memory to mush but i thought shocking retired off his own accord.

and also thought hinkley may have also pulled the pin and not been pushed, but less sure on that one.

Gary Ayres sacked Hinkley after the '95 GF - when he was Captain. Freo offered him a one year deal for about $100k, instead he took on the playing coach role for Mortlake in the Hampden League and a job as a salesman for Clarkes Pies.

During the last year of the Mortlake FC's existence on a cold and dreary July Tuesday in '98, Kenny arranged for Buddha Hocking to come and take the 20 or so stalwarts through our paces as a suprise and a way of saying thanks. Two better blokes you would not meet.

my distain for marxism knows no bounds... even with my New School flavoured education.

Stalinism (and Maoism, for that matter) had only the barest connection to original-flavour Marxism - NOWHERE in the Communist Manifesto does it say it's cool to kill millions of people and turn your nation into a prison-state.

Are you sure those two belong in the same sentence?

I’ve been as critical as most of Caro’s pieces. However, I thought this was a well crafted human interest piece that, for me, showed the maturing of a person who I’d thought lacked maturity and the influence of a centred understanding and supportive life partner. I’m surprised at some of the negativity.

Anyway, off to the ‘G’ to hopefully see the Cats purr.:thumbsu:

No doubt. I still think it has run it's race - it had its chance esp post WW2 when the conditions were
most fertile and didn't capitalise (no pun intended). It may yet have some relevance in relations between states where it's dialectic is more relevant... who knowns. For me, the fetishisation of the means of production holds limited utility - having said that there maybe something of value to recover from Marxist Economics...

I think my distain stems from what I see as post-marxist thinking high-jacking contemporary continental thought.

Anyway **** I loved Buddha only second to God as my favourite player growing up. :rainbow:

What's with people on here bagging out Buddha. Was my fave player

so can someone tell me a bit about the hocking fallout with the club? I cant really remember much, I thought his knees were stuffed and he just called it quits?
As I recall, he did retire, but I think it was a case of being forcibly encouraged to retire. He still loved the club though and wanted to be an assistant coach. The general opinion was that while he may be a decent enough coach, it would probably be best to go elsewhere to get new experience. It was no slight on him but I don't think he was too happy about it. Unfortunately with Steve back at the club, that ruled out a return to the club and made reconciliation alot harder.

Don't get me wrong I like Americans and love the place. Its just that every state has a place named after somewhere overseas, like Melbourne Florida, Birmingham, Lebanon, Paris, Palestine and Geelong. And some Americans think the "real" places are named after their towns.

PS: I made up Geelong

If what you're trying to say is that Americans are incredibly ethnocentric, I would agree with you. Trying to have political conversations with my brother makes me ill. There's a reason I live in Australia.

And in Atlanta, they put ice in your beer if you don't stop them.
Are you kidding me? Thank god I only started drinking when I moved to Australia.

Buddha is NOT aging well!

To be honest I think he looks pretty much the same as he did when playing, always had a head like a crashed Datsun

Home of Coca Cola, they put ice in everything.
There was a blizzard while I was there spreading all the way across the country from the midwest, and everything closed down, but the Atlanta front page headline was "Iceworks Frozen".

God, keep away from the South, for the love of all that is holy. Also, I hate ice in my Coke. Although I don't really like Coke either. Is it strange that I'm only just starting to see why I live in Oz and not the US?

On topic, I am still pleased to hear that Hocking's grown a bit and has largely come to terms/worked through his issues with Geelong.

The Nine Virtues of the Buddha are showing through:
1 worthy (of honor and hospitality, gifts and praise, veneration and respect) - 4 Carjis
2 self-awakened (enlightened through his own trailblazing efforts rather than benefiting from the discovery of another fully enlightened teacher)
3 endowed with knowledge and conduct (six unparalleled aspects of superknowledge and ethical personal behavior in accordance with wisdom and compassion)
4 well gone (attained to the supreme, the unexcelled, nirvana)
5 knower of the world (who fully knew both inner and outer worlds, the dimensions and paths of karma)
6 supreme trainer of persons to be tamed (a master physician for the physical pain and, moreover, the mental suffering of living beings)
7 teacher of devas and humans (guide of "shining ones," sometimes called "gods," who are subtle-unseen beings of various kinds, as well as ordinary human beings)
8 awakened (buddha, awake and able to awaken others by inspiring and pointing out the path-of-practice that brings about the realization of liberating truth)
9 blessed (holder of great virtues).

Hope Buddha never returns to Geelong in any capacity. He wouldnt understand the winning culture Geelong has enjoyed since 2007

Father of a champion son would be ok.

Got to know him quite well in his last few years as a player and during his stint with Peel
Awesome bloke , a real Jack the lad if ever there was one. Played a lot of golf with him - in those days he regularly stayed an extra night after the game to help his knees. Great value on the turps.
Saw the worst of him after being ruled a late out over here , couldn't believe how rude he was to Andrews and Davidson in the rooms.
I don't think Bomber ever worked him out as their conversations were "awkward" at best.
Seems to have matured , like we all do I guess !!
