I was trying to throw the haters a bone but you're probably right.

In most cases though, intentional or not, high contact seems to draw a free these days.

To the ballwinner goes the spoils I reckon.

You have the pill in you hand, you get the advantage IMO.

So much for protecting the head and being responsible for your actions.

But our Buddy is a protected species so no one is surprised.

Terrible decision. Open season to throw an elbow to break a tackle now.

Hammling didn't even get a free.

Franklin knew exactly what he was doing with that elbow, he's swinging it before his arms are even close to being pinned then he lowers his arms after the fact. He looks Hamling square in the eye before he zots him. I'm not upset that he's free to play, don't like seeing players rubbed out but from my PoV there's plenty of intent to hurt him there.

Extraordinary psychological insight - it's like you can read his mind!

Player raises his arms to keep them free while busting through a tackle.

Hamling was unfortunate but it's a contact sport, things happen.

Anyone who thinks this was worth looking at should join Christian at the weekly 'Soccer Mum Hysterics' meeting.

It's actually very clear from the footage that he wasn't looking at Hamling. If he had, he may well have been in trouble, depending on the time between looking at him and making contact.

The same people that hate the AFL for making continually poor decisions get angry when the AFL doesn't make a poor decision.

So easy to brand it careless when a player accidentally brushes an umpire. How that elbow could not be seen as careless is beyond me. But I do realise it's not Christian making the decisions, he's just a puppet for the corrupt above him.

Predictable thread.

"If Player X on my team did that then they'd be suspended for six weeks but Player X from your team is a protected species."

No intent. Reasonable action to avoid the tackle and get the ball out. Contact sport. Accidents happen. Should have been a free to Freo.

Move on.
Accidents do happen, except if the accident involves an umpire... then the players are careless. People just want some consistency.

Sorry mate - not following
Apologies if I misinterpreted your post. I thought you were implying that in a contest that benefit should go to the person with ball in hand, in this case Buddy's high contact all ok as he was the ball winner. When NN tackled he wasn't the ball winner so benefit of the decision went to the player who had the ball. I don't agree with that.

So you would be happy to see players get suspended for kneeing a player in the back of the head going for a mark?

Parker gets off, now Buddy again

GWS failing miserably so the 2nd AFL lovechild must be protected

Nothing new, nothing to see

Jog on

If we could schedule a meeting with Gil about it. Then get the rules changed.
What would that make us?

Nope you understood me right.

In Franklin's case he has the ball - it's not his job when he twists and turns to not get someone high. Otherwise rather than tackle someone, you just drop your head into their chest.

Equally - same with Naitanui tackle. Had Amon copped Nic high when he tackled him, I wouldn't expect Nic to get a free kick. As it was Amon got the kick because Nic got into his back.

In the dying moments of the Rd14 2009 game between Saints and Geelong (I only remember as it is probably the best H&A game I have ever seen) - Mick gardiner flew in the goal square and took a mark. Harry Taylor also flew and was knocked out on Gardiner's elbow. Now I don't expect Taylor to get a free kick when the ball is the object.

Equally, barring a deliberate fend off - I don't believe it is the ball carriers job to avoid getting a tackler high.

Ok so as long as you tuck the ball under the arm pit you can run through tackles and throw elbows into a tacklers face and knock them out?

I mean how could a player possibly foresee that they could break someones jaw doing that.

Thats the latest precedent that Christian has allowed.

Wonder if Naitanui is allowed to do that?

NN does do that, he just hasn't cleaned anyone up yet. You can't penalise a player due to their size and strength, otherwise you get absolutely garbage decisions like the NN tackle suspension.

So if you got the ball swinging your elbow into a tacklers face and breaking their nose is ok?

Its the swinging upraised elbow that is the issue here.

How can a player not reasonably foresee that that action has the potential to cause head high contact and serious injury.

Kick boxers use elbows for a reason. They are 10 times harder than a fist and pack a more powerful impact.
