I want to build up my endurance (my first goal is to last a footy match in the midfield)

how can i achieve this with a treadmill because i don't want to go outside (theres a major heatwave in adelaide, 41 C for 3 days!!!!)

i suppose i can go outside when the heatwaves over, but i wanna start now

running on a treadmill and running outside are 2 completely different things, they don't carry over to each other at all

on 1 the ground moves from under you and the other you move across the ground

that is stating the obvious, running on the treadmill will still give you cardiovascular conditioning. yes they are different, but running with an incline of 2% will provide the hamstrings/glutes with similar load as to what they would running outside. build your endurance with a foundation, start with Long slow distance, eg a light to moderate intensity for say 30 mins and progress by 5% a week. record the distances and see how you improve

I love the treadmill as it is something different and when you really push your limits, you can feel the abs burning. Love the feel of burning, never used to though.

Not encouraged to go on there everyday. I go on and off. One day on the treadmill, the other on the local footy oval. Hard to sort of measure your fitness level, so can't really suggest an appropriate program. Just make sure you're getting the most out of yourself and all should be good.

Try running earlier, before it gets too hot.

I've known two people who have competed at National level for middle & long distance, and they've both said the same thing about treadmills - it's bouncing, not running. For "spring" there is a benefit, but not much at all for running, especially for AFL which is more about repeated efforts at full intensity rather than distance running.

Yeah it's much much better if you run early, unless it's a cool day.

Interval training on the treadmill has certainly helped me and my running goals. As said earlier, I switch between that and a nice green footy oval. Interesting you said it improves your spring also, I have definitely noticed that within the last 12mths. :thumbsu:

Run at 6am in the morning like I do, its a lot better than at night as the roads and footpaths are still cool.
