i'm in dire need to remove data off my laptop, so i'm looking at getting an external harddrive simply to hold all the data.
anyone got any tips on what to look out for and what not to buy? any brands to keep away from?

as I said its purely to store data and thats it.

A hard drive is a hard drive. I haven't had one fail on me for yonks. The External part is the problem. Need a good case that doesn't fall apart. I got mine off ebay. The HDD is fine, but it's now an internal .

you can get 1 terabyte WD externals at officeworks for bout 250 bucks.

but beware.... its basically a hard drive in a plastic case..... it doesn't have shock protection like laptop or portable harddrives.

I had the misfortune to drop one while it was writing data (its most vulnerable state) and it was basically kaput from a misaligned read/write head.

Oh well - you need one of these.

I bought a 120GB external hard drive for something like $130, as it was the cheapest one available at Tandy's, and needed one urgently.

Then I saw an ad on tv where A&R were selling 320GB ext hard drives for around the same price, perhaps $10 more or so.

I'm not exactly a computer expert.. ****

actually its 199 western digital essentials drive and if thats not in stock we are giving the western digital elements drive (green box for the same price)

we also have a 160 gb drive for laptops for 89 bucks no power needed. drives are cheap as.

DROPPING HARD DRIVES IS NOT RECOMENDED.

Ebay is the way to go. I got a 250gig one for $100 including shipping. No probs with it at all. They can be had on ebay for good price if you are patient and wait for the right auction.

Thats actually quite expensive. I got my 500Gb one about 3 months ago for $150

:thumbsu: it pays to shop around
a terabyte for 199 and im sure centrecom and msy could do better

I don't think anyone will be able to beat that price for a 1 tb external harddrive :thumbsu:

its virtually the same price for a 1tb internal harddrive which is strange because externals usually have a premium.

I'd be wary buying stuff like harddrives off ebay...... if its anything like the flash memory market.....there would be lots of fake stuff.

If you want to cart around a power pack be my guest.

If it doesn't power via USB then its a pain in the arse ( I travel for work and like to take HD movies with me that often top 8gig in size)

Should have specified that I am only interested in USB powered drives.

If you need to plug it in to a power socket then its a pain in the arse for me:thumbsu:

That being the case, my price is pretty good.

If you can, avoid getting one which requires an external power supply or an inbuilt fan. Have had a few at work when the power supply has died and it wouldn't power up, or if your fan dies you risk cooking the hard drive.

I bought a Western Digital Passport hard drive from Harris Technology about 2 months back and i'm happy with it so far. It's got 320GB of storage yet its nice and compact and best of all doesn't need an external power supply

Of course if you don't need a lot of room then that is fine. If you need more space than you have no option but to get one with a power supply.

Depends how much space we're talking, mine's a 320GB hard drive. Thats still a fair amount of space for something which doesnt need a power supply
