The thing is, it's still a victory for the Kiwi's, because the Swiss team is made up almost entirely of New Zealanders!

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but didn't Italy give a good run at it four years ago? So this wouldn't be Europe's maiden voyage at the America's Cup (pun intended)...

The cup holders can call the race whenever they want basically, generally 3 to 4 years. New Zealand last defended it in 2000, so that's only 3 years.
As Dan said, Alinghi was skippered by Russel Coutts, who skippered Team New Zealands NZL80 yacht in 2000, and who nows hold the record of 14 wins - the most in the America's Cup.
The America's Cup is the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup which is where all the challangers race off for the right to race the holder.
The yachts are much like horse racing, where they are owned by syndicates, which is where the origin comes in to it. The team maybe all from one country but if the syndicate is from another, that's that yachts origin.
Australia didn't challange this time round, but will probably challenge next time.
