Why is Cairns an AFL 'enclave'?

Why is it that people from there tend to follow footy more than elsewhere in Queensland?

Is there a historical reason?

thanks to "Football Life" June 1968

the spin in this article
is places bruce andrew as dr livingston
however a view of trove shows australian football interest in and participation
existed (in cairns) at a significant level before this..

When we had an independent org that oversaw the game (ANFC), headed by former Collingwood champion Bruce Andrew they put some money up to buy land in Cairns which has since become Cazaly's, made plenty of money through pokies and has grown the game, owning the land is the key.
