The report in the Hun is staggering.

Ward got $800k a year to move to the Giants.

The Bulldogs offered him $285k a year to stay!!??

And apparently he was a lifelong Bulldog who would have stayed for an extra $50k on top of that?

Surely those numbers aren't right. The Dogs lost a player of his quality by offering a pittance and refusing to budge even slightly?

It wasn't handled very well from memory.

I'm not sure how accurate those figures are. I remember seeing that we had an offer of $400k on the table for him and theirs was closer to $750-800, which at the time was well overs. He also was an Essendon supporter growing up, not a dogs supporter as that article would have you believe.

Would anyone in their right mind turn down an extra $350k to stay in their current job?

Pretty happy with Jack Macrae as compensation. It's ancient history now.

The most confusing part is why is this a relevant story now? Because GWS are in the finals?
We've known this shit for years.

Strange, strange timing.

That said i'm happy that Fantasia & Garlic are no longer part of our club. What a mess.

Do you think he is worth 800k?

Yep. From the start.

It's not that he was the most skilled or talented footballer. He's not the face of the Giants but he seems to be their heart and soul.

...and if you compare that to what we were supposedly paying Scully and Folau, it's unders.

Campbell Rose didn't last particularly long after this, IIRC.

The lifelong Bulldog bit was poorly researched by Sam Landsberger (who is a Dogs supporter FFS), Callan definitely barracked for Essendon growing up. The Hun even reported it themselves here:

With that level of quality reporting, take some of the details in the recent article with a couple of grains of salt.

Bloke is a star.

It says they "panicked" and offered $400k after he he already committed to the Giants.

Doesn't add up... I thought it was always just a case of we can't match the offer. Surely if they only had to pay $335k it wouldn't have been an issue??
I wasn't being an ass I don't see enough of him except when GWS play Geelong. Looked good against us.

Actually if Treloar is worth $700k then $800k is about right. Suspect it's lower though, definitely since he resigned on a long term deal. Same for Scully and we love them both.

We definitely screwed this up - Fantasia wears a lot of blame for this.

If there is any bright side to it, we drafted Ward with the pick the Tigers gave us for Jordan McMahon and we got pick 6 in the compo which was Jackson Macrae, 2nd in the B&F for us in his second season.

A lot has changed since then though.

New rights deal and salary cap has pushed the amounts available. He wasn't worth 800k then - that's the reality and if not for the skewed market brought on by GWS / GC he most likely would still be at Whitten Oval.

Ward is a gun. Going to be a premiership player and also going to make a lot of money from his job. Would you not take 350K extra per year to move jobs?

Out of curiosity were you one of the few that were as forgiving with regards to Scully?

In case you ask, I had no problems with Ablett leaving for the same reason if the numbers being thrown about were clost to accurate.

Lol, somehow Richmond end up the losers of this.

Sigh.

True, but he was worth 335k back in 2010. Offered him unders as we tried to make one final top up attempt to win a flag and brought in Sherman and Djerrkura. :drunk: We should have been wary of the GWS threat and locked him up early, especially after losing Harbrow to GC. Handled really poorly by management at the time and it has been somewhat salvaged by Macrae. Surprised this is in the news now though.
