Hi guys. I am not here to gloat. I hope you guys would do the same on our board if we lost. Don't point fingers at each other and blame this and blame that. Just face the facts. Both teams have a long long long way to go.
Look carefully at your list deficiencies. They can only be solved by two methods. Hard work on the existing personnel to bring their game up to the required level and by recruiting more quality into the club. The former requires good development coaches and the latter requires good recruiters with a keen eye.
There is no point getting hysterical. It solves no problems. Those in charge must stress this and carry a positive attitude to the list. Success only comes with hard work and careful planning.
The same goes for our team. At this moment, we only have the luxury of saying we played a young team injected with a underdone champ and beat them. Hardly awe inspiring stuff.
Had you beaten us, it may have given you false delusions on your ability. The first game is not too late to get a reality check. It signals how much more work there is ahead of the team. It may benefit you more in the long term.
Calm down blue boys, your time will come. Hope you can look upon other teams with the same sentiments.

Good luck.

Thanks mate, very refreshing to hear after all the Richmond Carlton debates that have gone on over the past few months... it hurt like hell but after the storm it isn't all that bad, and a post such as yours goes a long way to put everything back into perspective.

I have been absolutely furious for years about our recruiting & development of players!!!

Now look at our top draft picks we have got over the years (Kreuzer will be left out, as he hasnt played yet!)

All the players are going to be good players, but no way are they a top 2 draft pick!!

Murphy- Comes close, but would much rather pendelbury or Thomas from that draft!

Kennedy- Although he is gone Pendlebury or Thomas would have been better option!

Gibbs- Joel Selwood is so much better its not funny, Gibbs moves well, but is as soft as butter..

Walker, certainly not worthy of a top ten pick!! wrong decision again!!

Although these players will be good & very servicable, a waste of a top draft picks!

MOST other picks we have had has been very disappointing to say the least.. Giggs, Harlett, Bower, Jackson, Betts, Jamieson etcc are not league footballers..

Look at our arch rivals & as much as it pains me to say this, they are so much better in evry department, especially recruiting & Development!

Clarke (Rookie), Obrien (Rookie), Maxwell (Rookie), Goldsack (pick 68), Lockyer (Rookie), Swan (pick 54), Johnson (pick 72).. Al these players play regular finlas & have made an immediate impact... All are integeral part of the scums team!!

There ealry picks have also been spot on. All said Xavier Ellis was worth pick 2 & they went for thomas..insipired choice.. Then pendelbury was a pick 5 was also a surpirise but what a greta choice!! We get murphy & Kennedy & they are nowhere near to the level of those too!

Didak, Brown & Ried are all top 10 picks and all look the goods!!

Tarrant played up & was traded rightly so.. Fev has also many times & is still here!!!

We have alot of work to do as a club & we can get all the number one draft picks we like but that means NOTHING!!!

Thanks ancient tiger. Despite how angry and pissed off i was last night, this morning was an incredible reality check. I hope this reality check has also hit the boys at the club. we need to work harder and we're still developing.

also i think coming into the game, the pressures and expectations on them was simply immense. the tigers had the whole "we've got nothing to lose" incentive whilst we had a lot to prove after a summer of being played up. People need to relax, its round 1, i hope ratts gave the boys a big roar down yesterday and has a week of tormenting training prepared for them so that we can see them come out hungry for a win next week.

Thats another thing i feel is missing, the HUNGER from the players for a win. Anyone agree??

I demand that Ratts works them silly. Fundamentals, discipline.
I hope the usual suspects go to training and give us a detailed report.

Cheers mate, a Richmond supporter coming over to offer advice and what not is highly refreshing:thumbsu:.

The only big mistake i can see out of our recruiting such yet is kenedy. would have rathered pendlebry. but as for murphy i think he has everything needed to be top pick, he is better then thomas and has shown more, thomas is falshier but hasn't been consistent. murphy has the balance agility and skill. wouldnt't trade him for the world. gibbs is a champion. im older then him and im only 18. give him time, selwood has another year on gibbs and selwood has been injected into a champion side. of coarse it would be easier to play better when ur team is winning. selwood is a champion but im not complaining that we have gibbs. he is not soft either, his not an inside midfiler like selwood or murphy. his his skill and class uses the ball and moves extremly well. his only gonna get better. take his third quater against hawthorn in the nab cup. playing on the toughest midfielder in the game sam mitchell, definantly won the battle that quater his work out of the middle was amazing and he had his heard over the ball. Walker is a bad kick when moving too fast yet has everything to make in the afl. kicking can be improved yet you seem to be foucsing on his negatives. has a incredible work rate has pace, athletic, has good skills(just not when running full tilt), and has got better every year. i believe he has achived more then cooney and he was number 1 pick. and how can u be so critical on our 2nd and third year players. bower is developing hugely and his is grigg. both played well against richmond and in the nab cup, jamison is a rookie, and got stiched up by a 16 year veteran of afl, bg whoop his shown a huge amount as has jackson who has the motor and skill to play afl footy i would have recruited him any day.. both will develop well, hartlett and edwards and on the up just need more time as does our list. we have a great recruiting manager. yes collingwood has done well with the players they've got but in 2 years time. i see carlton above collingwood. seriously the amonut of negativity being posted after one loss to richmond is incredible. richmond has been working all summer for round 1 and yay they beat un undermanned carlton side big whoop. they were at full strength. they wanted it more. were not that far off it's only round one, show some faith if u a true blue!

Are you a collingwood supporter by any chance?

Be a nice bloody change to see some one percenters and effective tackling too!

a couple of observations from an objective perpective (i tipped Richmond by 27 but I didn't have a personal bias one way or another):

in the middle...
your midfield is young and (therefore) prone to softness but it is on the up and the addition of Judd, Stevens and Hadley will take time to gel while Murphy, Simpson, Carazzo and Gibbs have all shown promise in their short careers and are hardly long in the tooth

you need some hardness in the middle but that will come when the competition for spots increases (an ancient truism of sport) and with the kilos of each pre-season

to me an obvious real problem was your lack of quality height on the park last night:

in the ruck...
Cloke appears a depth player - you need someone taller or fitter as your first ruckman.

i wouldn't claim any great knowledge of your list but if one or more of Ackland, Hampson or Kreuzer can replace Cloke and Setanta in the middle this year, the benefit will be twofold: firstly they will be a better ruck combo and, secondly, Setanta would be released to a permanent key position role (preferrably fullback IMO)

down back...
I was a big fan of Setanta at the back last year - fullback is a better place for a big fella to learn the game...Setanta's an athlete and a competitor and the good forwards will lead him to the ball (witness Merrett at Brisbane last year)

having the big Irishman back there will also free up Waite to play more of a rebounding role and allow him to run off his man much more...I seriously rate Waite and respect that Ratten seems committed to leaving him there this season - my tip is that he could be AA at CHB within two years

up forward...
Fev is a bit of a form yo-yo but he generally presented well last night even though he had the fumbles and the yips by his own standards...he'll kick plenty this year if he can keep his nose clean

you really missed Fisher last night - he's a versatile big-marking third forward who keeps defenders guessing...i think of him as a sort of young Russel Robertson and think he could really blossom in the right circumstances and his presence reduces the reliance on Fev

i agree with the OP - there's still plenty of work to do but you seem headed in the right direction (especially that Hadley > Judd > Betts passage on the wing)

peace
