I watched him in the 1st wizard cup game and he looked great but i have not seen or heard of him since. Is he injured or not just performing ?

The GFC pulled a "Bomber Thompson" and dumped the kid after playing a relatively good match. . Since then, Thurley has been lumbering in the two's, and judging by the VFL reports up on Cat's Claw, has been solid, but nothing special.

He's on the fringe.

Thurley will most likely play several games in the seniors this year, and has been putting in quite a few good games in the VFL.

Not injured.

Didn't get much gametime in his last Wizard Cup game, and got dropped for the final.

I'd imagine he'd get a run this weekend.

As been previously mentioned, Thurley is realistically fighting with Kingsley, Haynes, and S.Johnson for that 3rd forward role. Haynes and Kingsley would be ahead of him at the moment, and I'd expect that to be the reason. Though that doesn't explain why Bomber gave him so little time against Carlton after impressing against Port.

That is Thurley though. If they are waiting for him to come out and kick a big bag of goals, they will be waiting forever - it's not going to happen.

Playing VFL football is not going to help him develop, he has already had three years in the competition. If they want him to improve he has to get AFL gametime and if need be head back to the VFL to improve on a few things. Makes the decision of not playing him in the later stages of the wizard cup mindboggling.

Thurley is fighting for a forward spot and he is not going to get it easily, maybe he was carrying a slight injury against Carlton. Its going to be pretty hard for him to break into the forward line:

1. He is not a tall forward, expect at least 2-3 of Graham, McCarthy, Mooney, Kingsley or Playfair to be in the forward line at any one time.

2. Not to mention any players that rotate throught the midfield but rest up forward, there can be upto 2 of them at a time, and Thurley is no match for a Bartel, Ablett, Chapman, Riccardi or Kelly.

3. Thurley has to fight with players like Shannon Brynes (not that he is playing at the moment either) for a position in the forward line that is dependant on the side we play and their structure.

Thurley will play but like Brynes may have to bide his time in the reserves.

Id rather see Thurley given a game right now than continually giving Ricco a game for nothing.

Interesting that the club spent a relatively high pick on a 3(?) year VFL player, only to keep him playing in the VFL.

I think he'll play but just cos he has had 3 seasons in the VFL doenst mean he doesnt have to earn his position in the side.

The 2003 Draft was pretty weak you have to remember, experts were saying that it was the weakest on record, and Geelong admitedly picked him earlier than he was worth. Thompson himself said he should have gone around 30. 30th in a very weak draft isnt that promising but you have to take a risk and the risk worked by selecting Ling and Enright when they did in the circumstances. Maybe it will work with Thurley.

As a goalkicking forward he is equal, if not better than those 5.

We are too one-dimensional up forward and he will provide a ideal foil for those talls.

Regardless of current form, Riccardi, Ablett and Chapman are proven goalkickers. Thurley is a rookie who has proven nothing.

I want to see him given a game, but he ain't half the goalkicker that those boys have proven to be.

Needs to perform well in the VFL to be considered, and when given a chance, grab it for all it's worth.

Spot on, great post.

Interesting indeed

Also Cat in the Hat how can you say that the 2003 draft was week. It hasnt even been 6 months yet. Most of those kids can't drive yet let alone establish their worth in a senior AFL 22. Guys like Moody and McConnell can play trust me.

I find it a little strange that we choose another small marking FP/HFF. I reckon he have about 8-10 on the list now. None of whom have any great quality. It's painfully clear we need a crumbing goalsneak like all the top clubs have got. Someone like Harry Miller of Davey would may have been a smarter get in last years draft.
