8.00am and it was time to depart Optus Oval for our 2005 Community Camp in Shepparton. Stevo and Fish were the last to pair to board the coach as they were completing a nail-biting tennis match in the empty car park at Optus Oval in preparations for our Tennis tournament on Thursday morning.
A movie later, (Dodgeball) we arrived in Shepparton and it wasn’t long before we were in the coach again heading to Monash Park to meet the locals and then over the road to the Shepparton Council building for our official welcoming, civic reception and media conference. Teaguee, the local hero joined Kouta, Denis, CEO Michael Malouf and Shepparton Mayor Anne McCamish for the media conference. After the conference we had a bit of trouble fitting Teaguee’s head out the door, after a local journalist asked him ‘what is it like returning Shepparton as a Superstar!’
After the civic reception it was back to the Motel for lunch, again Teaguee stole the show as he hosted the winners of a competition ran in the local paper the Shepparton News. They can’t get enough of him up here.
After lunch, the playing group sat through a Medical presentation from Club Doctor Brendan de Morton. At the conclusion of the Docs presentation most of the players chose to cool their heels in the Motel’s pool or rest in their rooms as we tried to escape from the heat, before we made our way to Rumbalara for the practice match.
The Rumbalara ground looked superb and it was great to see all the locals turn out the watch the match, even in the 41º heat. A hot northerly wind blew straight down the ground that favored the city end of the ground. The practice match consisted of two hot 2 x 20 minute halves. It was that hot that we went through over 50 bags of ice from the BP service station during the afternoon.
It was a really good solid hit our for us, and I know you guy’s will want to know who starred. It was safe to say that it is clear that Walks has clearly continued to improve over the off-season as he really dominated through the mid-field. Jarrad Waite was also impressive in the midfield throughout the second half, as was Callum Chambers who booted 3 goals.
I’m sure you have read, about the game on carltonfc.com.au already, After the game it was back to the Motel for a stretch in the pool and a quick bite to eat then a brief rest before we boarded the coach to head to the official CUB “Meet the Blues” function at the Mooroopna Football and Netball Club.
As we stepped off the coach we were nearly blown over as the change in weather swept through Shepparton. When we got off the coach it was still a stinking hot 39º, but within in minutes it dropped to the high teens, which was a welcome relieve for the boys.
The Mooroopna Clubrooms were packed for the function. Players were drawn out of a hat, and were randomly placed at guests tables for the function. It was a great opportunity for us to get to know some of the locals and answer their questions, and also to see the kids faces just light up when one of the boy’s sat at their very own table.
After a beautiful dinner, I jumped behind the Membership and Merchandise stall to help drum up some sales for the Club. And although local boys’ Teaguee and Davo were the crowd’s favorites; it was left to Kouta, Stevo, Fish, Walks and Denis to head on stage for the footy panel.
At about 10pm it was time for the boys to board the Coach again to head back to the Motel. What a hectic day, photoshoots, civic reception, practice match and a function to cap it off plus a diary entry for you guy’s.
Well it just ticked after 11pm and we have a 7.30 start tomorrow at aquamoves pol and gym so I best be off, but keep checking carltonfc.com.au for all the latest on our community camp.
