I downloaded the microsoft update thing that comes up on my comp, and now the bit where i type in an address for a site has gone. Does anyone know where i can get it back from?

This can be adjusted by right-clicking on a space (near back, forward, stop, refresh, home buttons etc) and make sure Address bar is checked.

You are talking about Internet Explorer, right?
To reset the toolbars, go to http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/ietips.htm and follow the instructions under "Odd Toolbar Behaviour".
Just make sure all IE windows (including the instruction page) are shut before you run the reg file and don't worry about rebooting.
