I know that the stated position is not always the position a player ends up playing, but can anyone explain why:

1. Lockyer is often named at Fullback when we know he's been playing brilliantly in the middle recently?

2. Swan is named at Full-forward when he's also been playing in the middle?

3. Leon and Medhurst have been named in the Centre when we all know they are crumbing forwards?

Is all this just arbitrary or deceptiveness or whatever?

Dunno. But it doesn't decieve anyone.

You don't get fined for changing your 'starting 18' providing that they have been selected in your 'starting 18'. I'm pretty sure the interchange must remain the same at the start of the match or (at least) that's the feeling I get.

then why was Lockyer starting on the bench in the 2002 Grand Final such a shock?

I've got no idea either and it's quite funny really. I think in the Brissy game as the TV commentators were going through the list Richards was named in the forward line. ha!

I think they should go extreme and name people like Dick as ruck, Presti as FF and Rocca as BF etc etc just for the hell of it. Could be quite funny.

Mind you, I think Rocca the Rover is more of a shock then Rocca the Full Back.

But yes why not, Convert the backs to the forward, make Davis and Mehurst FB and CHB and make Licca our Ruckman

I don't think so - Generally the bench isn't the one that was named.

The issue with the 18 is that you can name an extended bench, and swap players from the bench to the emergency list up until not long before the game.

However, if you want to swap a player out of the starting 18 on match-day, you cop a fine, IIRC.
