can this file be retrieved?

so i was transferring some stuff from hard drive to disc

as it turns out i confused myself and deleted the file i wanted on the disc and kept the one on the hard drive which is about a year behind

when i go to the recycling box all it has is a short cut to the file i want to get back but no file content

is this file gone or just somewhere i can't find?

any help would be greatly appreciated

If the deleted file was on HDD then you can recover. Just google file recovery and there are heaps of programs to do it. If you have formatted a disk then im fairly sure its game over.

what above said except disregard the part about formatting. That would also be recoverable but a mega pain in the arse to sift through all the files.

it days not to install on the drive you want to retrieve from but i only have 1 drive (that i'm aware of)

It's saying that because it can't run on the drive it's trying to check..

It's been a while since I used any of them so I'm a bit rusty with them but if you just ignore the warnings and install it, there is an option once installed to create a bootup disk on CD. Create this disk then reboot using it and it will load the recovery software just after BIOS. You should then be able to run it and search for your file
