Don't want to make a new thread so just decided to bump this one as it was most suitable for what I'm going to say.

How does everyone think Cotchin has handled the captaincy after a full season and a bit? Has it helped or hindered his football performance?

I find it sort of hard to tell. He suffered a knee injury against Fremantle and his performances seemed a little down on the previous year. Possibly the tough job of being club captain got tougher for him because with this injury, he knew he wasn't performing at his absolute best which didn't allow him to lead in the way that he wanted to (i.e. through playing great football). He has noted that last year was frustrating.

Then again, no one probably would have handled it any better than he did in those circumstances which included leading the Tigers into the finals for the first time in a looong time! This guy has a lot of self belief and maturity and is doing it all before the age of 24 (getting married now expecting a child).

I believe the right decision was made making Cotchin captain and Deledio vice-captain.

If anyone watched the GCS game and watched him play, you could just tell how damn badly he wanted to win that game. Unfortunately, apparently no one else wanted to. I don't think it's affected his performance, but as any captain, he would have a lot on his plate as said by RichoLedio.

Not really playing how he can. I accept he tries his guts out and puts in 100% - but I think he needs some perspective. He wants to do it all and so wanders down to the half-back line to help out and gets given the easy kick. And the opposition are happy to see that because he's not hurting them down there. he needs to get more ball around the centre where he can create the play - as he can. He needs to trust his team-mates more and let them do their job.

I haven't explained myself well here, but I think that Cotchin is playing too much as just a mid-field link player (and regularly getting 30+ touches) - but they are not dangerous touches.

Concerns me that Dimma points out that Newy was the one that got them settled and refocused during the last qtr that lead to the last 10 minutes where we looked like a footy team again. Maybe a bit of what Wallaby said ... maybe something else - is he trying to play the captain rather than be the captain ??

There is more than one leader at a footy club WATIGE. If Newy was the one who settled them on this occasion then what's the problem?

Personally i think the captaincy can be a overrated role at a footy club. It's about how many leaders you have, not the fact that some bloke has a C next to his name.

Cotchin is wonderful player & a tremendously positive influence on the club, on and off the field, I just think he's trying to hard "to lead" & once he becomes more comfortable in the role, he will shine.
Brownlow medallist for me:thumbsu:

Exactly the word I have been unable to find to describe what I have been seeing over the past year and a half. Doesn't trust his teammates. Love cotchin like everyone here does, but I have to cringe when I see him sprinting 50m in the defensive half to get a handball off a fully capable houli for example, to end up putting himself and the team under unnecessary pressure. Dusty does it as well. Stop doing it, it ****s up regularly as shown on the weekend when they made a meal of it in the 2nd qtr. Let your teammates kick the ball, and run hard forward of the ball, don't waste your energy getting cheap kicks behind the play!!! Shits me to tears.

Others must step up to the plate. Cotch has always tried to carry us. He needs major help because whenever we are down in the dumps playing some pretty rubbish football more often than not Cotch lifts his game and busts a gut to try to get others into the game and get us over the line.

It's done predominately because one sided players like Houli have nothing to kick to on their preferred side .
I have no problem with Cotchin and Martin having the ball , they make things happen and predominately take the game on .

Agree with this. I'm a huge cotchy fan .....however, i think it is on the coaches heads to recognise this and try to instruct cotch to places where he can do the most damage. It gets on my nerves when guys (cotch does this the most) when they handball off to a guy, then ask for it back almost irrespective if they are in a more damaging/free position than the guy with the ball. The worse example being the dinky handball that was unneccessary cause it just added an unnecessary possession with increased risk of a skill error.

To fine tune the team the coaches are on the hook to stamp this out IMO.

Really well said Wallaby.

Last night I listened to the address that Ken Hinkley gave to his leadership group prior to the Showdown match and he said something along a very similar line, bascially not to be selfish by trying to do too much yourself. Well worth a listen if you haven't heard it.

I have no problem with them doing it when they are in space and there is a clear run to be made. Demanding the ball off a Houli or Vlastuin after they have taken a mark to go from being under no pressure to immense pressure for no reason is stupid. Especially when those 2 are better kicks than cotch anyway.

A few years back Robert Harvey copped a bit of flack because he was picking up 30 touches a week, mostly short passes and the opposition used to allow it because he wasn't hurting them. Are you saying a bit of this is creeping into Cotch's game?

Cotch is given a fair bit of slack on here compared to others(Including the coach).;)

I think that is incorrect .
Both Houli and Vlaustin are dominate upon one side and from behind a mark are not comfortable by foot . Cotchin and Martin would be the go to men in hope that the one who gives them the ball provides them a block and they are then able to set up play .
Either way the ball carrier is in control of what they do with the footy , I would be pissed off if Cotchin / Martin or any other playing didn't want the ball directed to them at all times .

Look I agree that cotch and dusty make things happen, and it is good to get the ball in their hands however they can't be everywhere at once. Would much prefer them sprinting to receive a handball forward of centre and trusting their teammates to get the ball to that position that's all I'm saying.
