Have read some threads re the captaincy and firmly believe that Kouta should take at least one more year. I believe that Thornton is the most suited to take over.

Whilst he has just had probably his worst season to date he has the integrity and desperation that is lacking in our club. Hopefully next season he can play across half back and have a good season to further stake a claim.

I believe that Waite is a great player but my instinct is that he is not perfect captaincy material. The same for Stevens at this stage.

Believe too that Kouta should take one more year but Waite should become the captain in 2007.

Thortorn is not captain material imo while Waite is just the player we need to lead Carlton for the next decade. Stevens imo is not a true Carlton man and should not be captain.

i also think thorton will make a good captain, jarrad waite also!.. i think stevo will take over like all of you said!

I nominate Fevola!

I sincerely doubt Kouta retaining the captaincy next year. He'll be 33 by January and I'd expect the job to be handed over to someone who'll be at the club long term. This will most likely be out of Stevens and Whitnall.

Thornton however, doesn't seem to impose himself upon the game enough IMHO to be of proper captaincy material.

buckley aint a true collingwood player but hes one hell of a captain.
i read in the age that stevo is going to get the gig next year.

At this stage of his career Stevens is IMO not in the same league as Buckley as a leader. I also feel Buckley to have proven himself to be a far superior player compared to what Nick has shown thus far. Perhaps the captaincy may change Nick for the better but woulod prefer him to show it next year first as Kout's deputy.

Thornton has the smarts and character to be captain material, despite a few dummy spits ;) but we have to move him away from fullback....permanantly. As someone else said, he can't impose himself on a game at fullback.

Waite's an obvious candidate and is the future face of this club IMO.

Anyway, I think from next year onwards we need a change in guard.
therefore:

2006
Stevens (C)
Waite (VC)
Thornton(DVC)

happy for Kouta to keep the gig for 2006 and give others like stevens, waite, thornton, etc another year to stake their claim for the captaincy in 2007

buckley as a captian was hated by his teammates and only in the last 2-3 years has this changed.
a clubs best player is not always the best option for captain.

You guys should give it to Digby Morrell or David Clarke they are superstars
isn't it time you sold out your club voted to merge, hence sending your club into extinction?????? :p

i didnt vote for us too merge. Our club is fine now anyway, were not the ones who are currently bottom of the ladder trying to work out who to pick 1st in the draft. You'll probably trade your picks for Wakelin or something as you have done every other year although Mick Mansfield did do pretty well didn't he.

Whitnall won't be captain. His future has a big cloud over himself and the last thing we need is the youngsters following his diet and training regime.

Thats exactly what it should be.

while i admire Thornton as a player and believe he has a lot of potential ,IMO he is nothing like captain material ..his decision making at times has been atrocious this year...when under pressure he often struggles to hit a target with hand or foot .
maybe with more experience he will improve ..for our sake i hope so .
Nick Stevens will be our next captain for a few years to come ..with Lance as his deputy

I'm a great advocate for J.Waite and Bret Thornton, i think Nick Stevens should be Carlton's next captain though, Waitey just isn't ready for a leadership role yet. I beleive Kouta should hang on to it for 1 more year, as Carlton has an extreme lack of experience and he is our most experienced, saying that i doubt he will be captain next year, my guess

c - Nick Stevens
vc - Jarrad Waite
dvc - Bret Thornton
- maybe Heath Scotland & Lance Whitnall (if he stays) in there somewhere
(i'm happy with that)

its all part of the AFL cycle
our time at the bottom is only short term, we will bounce back and bounce back hard, don't you worry about that.
i am certin that carlton will win a premiership before melbourne do,

i really feel for you, going your whole life without seeing your club win a premiership.

BTW any snow left at Buller?

Most of the time when teams bounce back they do so with a decent core of players such as StKilda which already had Hudghton, Harvey, Thompson, Peckett, Jones, Thompson and they were able to get Gehrig and Hamill from other clubs and lost Everritt and Barry Hall. Carlton are looking to come from the bottom with Kouta 32, Camporeale 30, French 30, Lappin 29 these experienced core of players are too old by the time you get a few players through the draft they will be retired. Other than these players you are building with Fevola, Stevens, Whitnall, Scottland, Thornton, Waite and Walker. You have 14 players who are good enough for AFL of which 4 are 29 or over. So in summary you need to draft another 16 players with about 8 of them needing to be in the class of Dal Santo, Riewolt or Ball. Another point to make is that by the time you have finished last enough getting priority picks you will come up against teams like StKilda and Geelong with 18 year old first gamers against Ball, Dal Santo Hayes when they are at the peak of their career.

So good luck bouncing back hard.

I would have thought Fisher, Carrazzo, Simpson and a few more would be 'AFL standard'. Why compare us to the Saints? Clearly the most talented list in the competition. We are nowhere near them and wont be for 5 years.
The 1 thing our club has going for it is the fact that in the next few years we will be losing a lot less than most with senior players retiring.
We will lose Kouta and French who would hurt us. Other bottom clubs will be losing a hell of a lot more than that.

We have Waite, Stevens (will captain next year), Thornton who will be leaders of the club for the next few years whilst we're rebuilding. Before the Saints bottomed out in 2000 their list was poorer than ours and if you count 2005 as our ground zero like 2000 was for them.We have more to work with Walker, Russell, Blackwell, Hartlett, Carrazzo, Simpson, Bentick, Betts with a year or two in the system, which you can add to this year's draft crop.
Not to mention that trades haven't started where we'll hopefully be going hard for Salopek and possibly players/picks for Lance.
