I finished uni last year. I did a four year degree which didn't excite me one bit. I knew it wasn't a degree I wanted to do early on, but thought I would just push through it. I had some good times and met some good friends, but that's about all I think I can take out of it.

I have basically been working in this industry for a couple of years now, and full time since the end of uni. The work is so boring, so tedious, so old school, I feel like a can't push on with it much longer. The work is not great on my body either, as I am standing for the whole day, which takes it even less tolerable! Also, it's pretty shit money for a degree that produces very few people a year, and where they talk up the money earning prospects throughout the whole course.

So basically I am looking to get out. I am 25 and have no ****ing idea what I want to do, but I am pretty sure that I don't want to work in this industry. Any advice from people that have been in the same situation? I am definitely done with uni, and was just thinking of maybe applying for a Courier job or something!

Think about the things u enjoy doing, and see if you can find a career that involves those things.
You will definitely get sick of courier work. I was a warehouse manager for a few years and happy courier drivers are few and far between.

lol, is that true? Well I suppose you do just drive around all day, but having said that, I just stand around all day.

Sorry I don't have advice for you but I would like to play " guess what you do".

4 years study.
Not many graduates.
Lots of standing.
Money not so good.

Are you a radiologist?

Haha, this could be good actually.

No.

Like another hint? Wouldn't be surprised if you didn't get it, not many people even know what we do.

I've got a knack for working these things out, I'm gonna guess you are a Surveyor or something like that.

I thought surveyors did pretty well, say in the constructive industry they would wouldn't they?

pfft, maybe, definitely not what I have been involved with. To make decent money you have to be fully licensed, which means further projects and study after uni. Basically in that time I could have studied to be a doctor. It's just...not for me.

My friend did a one year tafe course to become a surveyor.

You could look into getting work on a govt project regarding the building industry. You have expertise and places like the building commission value that.

Mate, Mining Industry in North West WA is going berserk at the moment. If you don't mind being away from home & can put in long days on your stint there is an obscene amount of money to be made up here.

Your profession aside you can get a job walking around with a grease gun squeezing grease in nipples (No not them kind) for $150,000 a year.

If you are good with money you could set yourself up for life after 5 years. The problem I see with lots of guys coming through (especially drilling offsiders) is they can't seem to fathom having so much cash when they get back to town & just blow it all.

Many flights are now coming direct from over east now also as Perth Airport can't handle the demand.

Something to ponder on maybe..

What are your passions and hobbies? Is there something you like to do that you could make into a business?

I love gardening and a year or 2 ago got a part time job I loved but wasnt sure if it would make ends meet, so I experimented with a gardening business on the side. This has worked out really well. 1 days gardening work for me covers about 3 days pay from my other job. Do you have a passion like this that could see a business flourish?

You also must be working in a particularly low paying surveyor job. My mate finished surveying at uni last year and now, first year out, is on a VERY healthy payscale!

I was thinking about maybe starting up a business, even if it was in Surveying just doing feature plans or something, which doesn't require me to be licensed. Probably won't be that expensive to kick off. My brother and I have been talking about starting a business together, and were actually discussing gardening! So your business has kicked off...that's awesome.

That's the thing as well, I like a lot of things, but don't really have a strong passion. Jack of all trades, master of none, sort of thing. But I have grown a sound interest in beer and brewing beer, maybe that could be something.

Well, I suppose if I went into mine surveying like Crooza mentioned, the pay is obviously good. The type of Surveying that I am in now doesn't pay great until you complete a license, which I am not very interested in.

Thanks, things to consider.

Done a bit of Surveying on and off for the past 2 years. No degree or anything just a chainy and I can relate to what you are saying just because mainly I am on the shittest jobs you can get but I have also been on some good building sites and have enjoyed myself. My family are partners in the biggest company here in Canberra and we are never short of work around here. What sort of work have you been doing in your area?
I can see it being tedious and dull if you were just doing detail work all day.

It also does seem it is a bit of a stretch to get registered and you probably can't blame them why they aren't doing it. Additional 2 years of projects after UNI isn't it? 10 years time there won't be many registered surveyors around.

Yeah we mainly do detail and re-establishment surveys for purpose of subdividing etc, some set out work. Party leading is only slightly less boring than chainy work!

There will hardly be any. Yeah it is about 2 years worth of projects, but very few will do it in that time, just because it is a pain in the ass. Average age of a Surveyor being something like 55, so yeah they will be struggling in a few years time.

Yeah there is alot of property work going on in Canberra, so you find yourself not doing detail day in day out which is a good change up. Punching in codes all day, everyday can make a man go crazy. Yeah not much fun standing behind the Jigga all day long in the hot sun or those really cold days. Had some shockers.

Yeah we have 2 Kiwi's that just came over and they have 2 years to complate 5 different projects or something like that. Luckily we have work to do, otherwise it would take them forever. Haha yep just the age my old man is at. We have quite a young firm going on which goes ok.

This is something I'd love to get started in. I've got family in WA and haven't got much in Adelaide to stay for so it's something that appeals to me but the mining industry demands experience doesn't it? How would one go about getting into the industry with no experience ?

What Uni did you complete your degree at Hot Spenny? I finished my degree in 2008 in a course that is basically surveying. The problem now is that their aren't as many jobs d/t the financial crisis, I got in at a good time before shit hit the fan. Anyway I work offshore on a seismic ship now, work 5 weeks, holiday 5 weeks, at the moment off the coast of Brazil. Very interesting but long hours, decent money although not as much as these mining jobs are supposedly giving. From what I know you need to know someone to get a job up north in WA, it's not as simple as rocking up and saying hello... Anyway think about what you want, there are always more options.

.

I used to work in the oil Industry, but left that to start my own brewery. Find your local microbrewery, get to know the brewer, and offer to help out about (offer to rake out the mash tun, clean kegs, etc etc). It is a good industry, very friendly, doesn't pay all that well, but you make something that people love.

It is also an industry where you can start at the bottom doing shit jobs and work your way up just through enthusiasm and working hard. You can get a degree but you don't need one at the start.

Work for free in the beginning... after work, weekends, your local brewer will like the help and then when there is a real job available it will be you who they turn to.

my 2c

I did it at RMIT, 4 long years! What course did you do exactly? I am thinking long and hard mate, don't worry about that!
