Graduated from my Biomedical Science degree (pharmacology major) in 1999, completed a Graduate Diploma in Education in 2000, but ditched teaching to work in pathology. I now work for a pharmaceutical company (CSL Ltd) in their Tetanus Laboratory. Hoping to get a job in quality operations in the near future. I don't mind my current job, but i see it as a learning experience and a start.

How much experience did you have when you first started your job?

Had only my experiences from Uni.

My advice on how to get a job in the field:

If you are not currently working treat finding a job almost like a full time job (i.e. spend 20-30 hours a week on finding a job). Create a resume and have it checked by others. Create a general Application letter along the lines of detailing you knowledge, skills and experience and state you are seeking a training position or experience. Make about 50 copies of the application letter and resume.
Go through the Yellow Pages and find IT related businesses and post out a copy of the Application letter and your resume t oas many businesses as you can.

Ontop of this apply for positions in the Sat. paper.

Also atleast 1 day every week pickout about 5-10 businesses which are within the same area (say in the City, eastern Suburbs etc). Dress up in a suit and tie, etc, and visit the businesses personally. Ask to see the Human Resource Manager or company manager/director. Introduce yourself and stat you are seeking experience in the related fields and give them a copy of your resume. This will do 2 things 1) display you're keen and proactive 2) helps you develop your confidence in talking with potential employers (this comes in handy when it comes time for interviews).

Aim to send out your resume and application letter to 20-30 companies every week.

Doing the above you should be able to pick atleast some work experience somewhere which could lead to a position or atleast look good on your resume.

Cheers

I work for MI5 as a secret agent/assassin infiltrating terrorist organisations and seducing attractive women.... guys come on this is the internet, you know the nutbags that peruse this site, stop handing out info for their stalking files.
Funny that, I work for MI5 as well, but in a much more important and clandestine (until now) role.

I deliver good looking girls to pubs all around Sydney between 10pm and 2am. Haven't you guys noticed that all the girls seem to be better looking at around this time? Well, I deliver them by the truck load. The girls are fitted with tracking devices and we have a surveillence van that monitors where the girls get to. In the morning, while you guys (the ones that have hooked up) are still asleep, we do the switch - we swap the good looking girl for an ugly girl.

Beer goggles are a myth invented by the MI5 to cover up the real truth.

Yay for me ;)

Im in Year 12 and your my hero :D

Everything I want to be. :D

Astronaut, gigolo, professional wrestler and head of a major religion are all jobs that I haven't done. I am a statistician/analyst working in the administration of a major Melbourne university.

I basically stuffed around in High School. Mucked around with my mates, went to footy training, skipped school whatever. Ever since I was little I have always wanted to be a Primary School Teacher, but of course I didn't get the marks that I wanted.

So the course I got into was a Bachelor of Management at the Uni of Ballarat. That lasted about 5 months, I then worked for a couple of years, and then got into Bachelor of Arts at Latrobe thinking I would do that course then do a one year Dip Ed at the end, but I hated that as well and that lasted 2 years

So now at the age of 23, and being sick of stuck in a office, I have decided next year to redo my Year 12 at night. I know what I want now, and what I need to achieve, so I am going to work my ass off to get there. Some people may think I am crazy, but I see a certain Bachelor of Primary Education couse at Melbourne Uni, that is ready to have me in 2004

My dream career would have to be in the Information Technology industry.

I am currently studying certificate II in Information Technology and I am hoping to go right through to the finish and set up my own business from home.

I would like to design websites for other people

Why not try entering UNI as a Mature Age student? That is what I did after bumming around in HS and years afterwards. Should be able to enter via sitting a Mature Age entry test, but be quick as I think applications close in about October.

P.S. - Even if the Bach. Pri. Edu. doesn't accept Special Entry applicants you should simply apply for a similar degree/diploma that does accept Special Entry applicants and then switch over after the 1st year (relatively easy to do as long as you pass your 1st year subjects). This will save you spending 1 year doinf Year 12 again.

Thanks for tip Kaysee but they don't do that Mature Age entry thing anymore, I have checked it out with VTAC.

They would look on my past results and I really don't want them to do that, hence the whole doing Year 12 again

I am currently doing Human Movement at VUT, which is a bachelor of applied science.

Hate the course in a big way. Hopefully next year will change to Primary education or even better Primary PE teaching.

Are there any other Education Institutions which take Mature Age entries? and then use that to get into Uni instead.

IE: Apply to something like TAFE, do 1 year then apply for Uni.

To me just seems like a bit of BS having to go back and do Yr12 again. Over here in Adelaide most Unis have alot of degrees/diplomas that accept Mature Age entries or take students who have attended TAFE or other education institutes.

anyway goodluck.
