IF I were on the phone to that wonderful place in the sky and could talk to legendary Tigers administrator, the late, great Graeme Richmond, I would ask: "Why don't you go after Wayne Carey as coach in 2005?"

In his unique way GR might reply, "Crikey, that boy might have a plan on his hands".
This may be Richmond's one chance to get a freak into the club who could do something sensational.

Is there a problem in taking a risk? Carlton took a risk when it recruited Ron Barassi in 1965 and he had never coached before.

The Blues wanted someone to change the club's direction totally and one of the greatest players of the era was the man to do it.

My question is, if Wayne Carey could be lured to the challenge, wouldn't you get someone who has shown great leadership and is the next bloke into the greatest team of all time.

Coaching is a different game to Barassi's era, when he had one or two assistants. Now we have a panel of coaches.

With a good support group, Carey could be one of the best marketing, decision-making, iconic young coaches you could hope for.

If you look at the coaches hired at various clubs in the past 20 years, there have been some average decisions made, so you can't lose on someone with so much talent.

Of the recent greats Gary Ablett does not want to be involved in coaching, and Carey has made a mistake and been buried for it, but he will bounce back.

What he did has probably happened in every workplace in Australia, but not a lot of footy teams.

I don't sit in judgment, but, in the end, you have to move on. He needs a career after 35, and his decision-making will get better.

Like Carey, Leigh Matthews's magnificent career had a black spot, too, He was deregistered, and there are not many footballers who have been. Lethal smashed Geelong's Neville Bruns and he might have felt the bloke at the time deserved it. The next year Matthews was coaching Collingwood.

Carey has the ability to lift a club and be a great leader of his team.

In the end it will be interesting what Carey's former mentor Denis Pagan's opinion would be on whether Carey could coach in the short-term future.

Tim Watson's sacking should not discourage brave clubs wanting to hire recently retired players with little experience.

Does that mean it will never be done again?

Maybe Watson was going down the right track, but could not keep the job long enough to have all his draft choices there the way Grant Thomas has now. I don't know.

No doubt, Damian Drum did the right thing at Fremantle. Did Watson, too?

The best assistant coaches are a great help to a football club and a young coach. At Essendon, we have had Mark Williams, Denis Pagan, Neale Daniher and Mark Thompson. What more could I have asked for?

In my case, when I came to Essendon I hadn't coached, but I had very good advisers in Brian Donohoe and Kevin Egan in the early days. Carey would find out who he needed and who he could trust.

There is no doubt Carey probably needs a break, but Richmond will miss an opportunity.

Carlton did it, Brisbane has done it with Matthews. Hopefully, people think Essendon went out and got a young coach who changed the club around a little bit with no experience.

Richmond got Tommy Hafey who had only coached in the bush. North Melbourne lured Barassi to change its club, and he launched the Roos with the help of the 10-year rule.

Then Essendon got me to change the club. Then Adelaide got Malcolm Blight to change it. He had coached, but he changed the way the Crows were perceived in the community.

Who is next? Carey? Why not?

Sheedy wrote the article

Harvey Told To Spread His Wings

ESSENDON chief executive Peter Jackson has joined coach Kevin Sheedy in imploring Mark Harvey to spread his wings at another club next year.

Jackson said that despite the popular perception, Harvey was not necessarily second in line for Essendon's coaching job if Kevin Sheedy had moved on.

He said despite his achievements as a player and assistant coach at Essendon he needed to move on before he could come back to the Windy Hill fold.

"To be honest with you, I hope Mark gets his own position as a head coach next year because I think he is ready for it, but that doesn't automatically mean he would be the coach next year if Sheeds wasn't available," Jackson said.

He also reinforced the perception that when Sheedy moved on the club would appoint a favourite son.

"I am not in any way disparaging what Mark Harvey has done," Jackson said. "He has been fantastic, but it doesn't hurt just to get out of your normal club environment and go somewhere else, if only to realise that what he has learnt at Essendon is the best he can learn."

Richmond assistant coach Wayne Brittain hasn't ruled himself out of being a contender for the vacant Tigers' coaching job. But the former Carlton coach said he would not put his hand up for the job.

"I know everyone runs around putting their hands up, but, I mean, if Richmond want me to coach they will come and speak to me," Brittain told 3AW yesterday.

I heard Wayne Brittain on 3AW letting us know that he was interested in the coaching postion but didnt believe in making a a song and dance about it. If he was appointed id dance right off a pier.

If Brittain was made coach i reckon there would be Diamond Valley football clubs with bigger memberships than ours.

As for reading the Herald sun this morning and reading Sheeds article suggesting that we should go for Wayne Carey as head coach had me wondering whether he was on the weed.

Does he give a damn about the club?

I read that and realise he was never serious about returning to Richmond as anyone who loved the club would not use us for some lateral article like that. **** that

If I were a Tigers player, I'd find it very hard to play under someone I don't respect. Carey is an absolute scumbag, lowest of the low.

Harvey - dumber than Frawley.
Carey - roots his mates wives

Both these names have been mentioned by Sheedy in regards to Richmond.

Read between the lines - he's senile.

I wouldnt mind Knighter or Gale back at the club.. Two I could see demanding respect from the younger brigade.

Mick McGuane is thought of as a very tacticly aware coach who has had great success with the teams he has been involved in (Burnie Dockers 2 premierships amd turned club around from brink of extinction and Gisborne 2 premierships). He has been in the running for a couple of assistant coaching positions and is currently The Western Bulldogs forward scout.

I'd be happy enough to see The Doggies apppoint to our coaching staff. Wouldnt let Carey anywhere near my club though.

Mick McGuane has done an amazing job at Gisborne, albeit with the wealth afforded him by the club's "fundraising department".

But I guess bringing money into the club is part of the senior coach's role now, anyways.

Gisborne is so far superior in the Bendigo League it's laughable. The last two premierships, and they won't lose a game in 2004 ...

That said, Mick has some personal issues to sort out before he'd be aloowed through the door of an AFL club in any serious capacity.

I can just see McGuane having **** sinking contests with the team after every match.

He may be tactically aware, don't know how he'd go about instilling discipline in the blokes though.
