when carey was looking for a club, i was hoping that he would come to mine....now that ive seen how he has performed since his comeback, im glad we didnt pusue him(although he was ok today) i just wondered what your responses are since he has been at your club.

1. did u want him at your club in the first place?
2. is he performing the way you expected he would?

1 yes l wanted him

2 no but we should not be relying on a 33 year old to win us a game of football. Carey should be played out of a pocket and what ever he gives us is ok. With a major target it would make him less important to our system.

1. Yes I did. But that's because the club proudly announced that he would be the anwer to our inability to take overhead marks up forward. Sadly they either overlooked or forgot to tell us that he can't raise his arms above his shoulder level.

2. For the reasons above, not within a bull's roar, which is not his fault. The players look for him far too much which now exaggerates the fact that we can't take an overhead mark up forward.

If the club knew that he could no longer take overhead marks it was totally incorrect to recruit him.

If we could turn back the hands of time, Daniel Wells would look good in a Crows guernsey.

1. Yes but at the right price and not at the expense of getting Pavlich
2. Yes. Let me explain that a little bit. Once we got Carey I liked what I heard out of the AFC when they said that it will not be a Wayne Carey show and Carey will be icing on the cake. We had that scenario for 1 game against Freo in round 1 last year. Carey was a 3rd tall and kicked 4 goals, took 7 or 8 marks and had 12 possesions. Stevens and Perrie both had very good games and kicked 3 each. Thats the role Carey was brought to the club. For a number of reasons we were forced to to play Carey as a key forward and as is the case this year build a forward line around him. :(

1. Did I want Carey at the Crows?

Initially no... I had never been a huge fan of the guy at North. When he first departed the Roos I didn't even consider the possibility he'd come to the Crows. When he announced he was looking for a club I wasn't too keen on him going to Adelaide. When Adelaide was on the short list I wasn't overly thrilled.

Then yes... We lacked a good full forward. Carey seemed like the man. I was happy when he announced the Crows as his club. And I got sucked into the idea that he'd deliver us a premiership.

2. Is he performing the way you expected he would?

No.

Now, onto today's performance against Freo. Some rated it, I didn't.

Here's my thoughts on what he showed today:

Positives:

* Got out on the lead a few times and took some good chest marks
* Took one overhead mark
* Able to draw free kicks (yeah that's barely a positive)

Negatives:

* I think both goals he kicked were with those soft frees he drew
* Missed too many set shots; doesn't look confident from outside 40
* Hopeless in contested marking situations; wouldn't even offer so much as a spoil when a man got back in front of him
* Hopeless at ground level; he can't even bend over to pick the ball up!
* Too slow in pace - some of you say Ben Rutten is slow, well if Rutten has the turning circle of a cruise liner, then Carey has the turning circle of a planetal orbit!
* Left foot? On the last point about his turning circle, when Carey tried to run around McPharlin, he ran onto his left (toward goal), then back onto his right (toward the boundary line), why??? Cannot he not kick on his left? When he eventually kicked it nothing came of it.
* Too slow to make a decision - the ball bounced up into his hands and he runs right into a front on tackle... painful to watch

As our sole tall forward Carey was always going to be involved in a lot of the play. But he simply didn't make anywhere near the most of it.

1. Yes. Have always been a fan of the king since year dot. The best player I've seen. Should we have traded what we did for a 31yo with a history of shoulder and other assorted injury problems who'd just had a year out of the game? Hell no. Nothing to do with hindsight, just common bloody sense - especially when we probably could've lured Pavlich home for roughly the same deal.

Ask any North Melbourne fan and they'll tell you the King was on the decline and was nowhere near the player he once was before the Stevens furore broke. Whoops.

2. No. I wasn't expecting vintage Carey, but I also wasn't expecting an injury-crock who can barely run, and when he does take a grab around 50 he looks to dish off rather than shoot.

My sentiments eaxctly and agree with Stiffy about the Freo game in 03 re his expected role, but now it seems that we wont get back to that.

1 - absolutely yes, wanted him with a passion

2 - if he could have kicked straight he could have kicked 5 or 6 yesterday. without Mark Stevens, we are missing a vital link in the forward lines - Wayne would do better if he was around.

What he said.
Thats the role that he should be playing. We paid way too much, but I can understand and accept the clubs reasons. If we had/do win a premiership, we would be hailing the decision as a masterstroke.
Having said that he is playing like you would expect a champion of his age to be playing - no more, no less.
Just not enough support for him, from other KPP.

Agreed with most of your comments Dave, but can't on this one.
Whilst his body has aged and is letting him down, his thinking is as sharp as ever.
IMO he chose to barge into the tackle as he has throughout his career.

It is a shame to see him, continually out bodied in one on one contests. During his career, this was, with his agility, one of his strengths, with not even Jakovich able to outbody him.
Now haddrill, and almost every opponent has been able to shift him out of position.

He'll be better than he was last year, turn those goal kicking numbers around (3.1, 2.1 and 5.2) and thats 10.4 for the yr, not the 4.10 he's lumbered with instead, he'll do some damage before the year is out.

I was just checking his stats and realised how crap he is in front of goal. He needs some major goal kickcing practice. 4.10 is not good froma player who was considered one of the best set shots at goal for a long time now.

He is getting his shots but he is not converting. Once we start delivering it to him a bit better he will kick a few more goals. Pitty we don't have a crumber around his feet all teh time because a small forward could kick a lot this year just playing at his feet.

1. YES - but only at the right price. I was never happy with what we gave up for him.

2. NO - I never expected him to be a star but he has disappointed me, no doubt.

Having said that I don't think he has been as bad as many people suggest. It's just that the high expectations that people have of him make his performances look terrible when in reality he has been quite servicable.
