CARLTON will let its mosquito fleet loose in the midfield next season in a bid to combat new interchange bench restrictions.

Speedy small forwards Jeff Garlett, Eddie Betts and Chris Yarran will be deployed more frequently through the middle as the Blues look for increased versatility.

Clubs will be forced to operate with three interchange players and a substitute from next season, with the AFL determined to curb rotations.

Blues coach Brett Ratten said the controversial bench overhaul would make it vital for players to contribute from multiple positions.
Decent idea, could be good to see in NAB cup how effective it is, especially monitoring the players?

id say yarran wouldve ended up as a mid anyway, all 3 are capable of joining your midfield rotations in any case IMO.

Yeah, i remember seeing betts in there a few times and actually being quite effective in there, so it will be quite relieving on a few players allowing them to go forward as well (Murphy - who is a pretty decent goal kicker) will also be good to see Mclean in full flight as he did play his role well when he was fully fit, I'm not too sure but it will be interesting to see how Ratts sliding jigsaw puzzle goes next season.

i saw betts play up the field this year at times, i didnt think he had the tank, pretty impressive, wouldve made a gun mid if he'd gone that way from the start, leon ended up being a capable mid for us at times through 09, they're similar types, as ratten said, all players need extra strings to their bows now days.

For at least the last three years, we've been told by the club during the offseason that Eddie would spend time onball during the upcoming year. It doesn't happen much.

Similarly, I would be amazed if these guys (Betts, Yarran, and Garlett) play midfield next year. I think it is just the club trying to put together a feel good story. They know that none of them have the tank to consistently play midfield - and in the case of Garlett, he doesn't even have the strength to do it.

Hardly earth shattering news.

The Sub rule means that every team will have one less midfield rotation on the bench, so the pinch hitters are going to pick up more workload.

Personally I suspect Garlett will be the guy who surprises. Of the three I see him as the one with that special something.

Eddie has been to important to our forward line over the past 2 or 3 years to allow him to move around.

Now we have a few more options capable of kicking multiple goals, hopefully he wont be relied upon too heavily and in turn will be released.

Agree with absfab - Garlett is the one to watch. If he bulks up to a reasonable level and continues to improve, he will be something very, very special.

Eddie has been very good for us in patches in the midfield, and I think we all want him to spend more time there. Jeff would be our version of Lewis Jetta - I doubt very many players would be able to catch him.

Yaz is a little bit of an unknown, but he certainly has all the skill to make it as a midfielder.

With enough hard work, I think all of these guys could be quality midfielders for us. However, I think they're so dangerous in the forward line that I would rather see them stay there. It's not like we don't have enough midfield guns without them.

"You can't have enough midfield guns..." WH quote.
