The Carlton Football Club has suspended its Property Steward, Wayne Gilbert, following inappropriate behaviour at the end of the round 12 match against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium last Friday night.

“As a result of his actions following the game on Friday night we have suspended Wayne from his match day duties for the next four matches. This is a significant penalty for Wayne who has been the Carlton Property Steward for 27 years and has not missed a Carlton game during that period,” said Carlton’s General Manager Football Operations, Steven Icke.

“We are certainly aware of the AFL rules in relation to officials approaching the umpires during or after a match. However it is not just about the official rules of the competition, it is also about respect for umpires and the important role everyone at AFL level plays in setting the right example.

I know the game needs umpires, blah blah blah but good on him! The umpiring last week was atrocious! I know there is a proper way to go about it but I'm glad we have somebody at the club who is passionate enough to actually say something about it then and there!

Not true. Its not even his place to say anything. For anyone to crap on about it in the heat of the moment is unprofesional and isn't going to achieve anything.

Agree. They were shocking last week, especially in the first 1/2. The free ledger was like 14 against 3 for early in the 2nd - must be some sort of AFL record. That definitely had an impact on the scoreboard early on. Some of the decisions I saw paid against us looked pre-meditated to me. The umps were targeting players like AJ in particular. Can't blame the umpires for any loss, because you always have to make sure you play that much better to negate these factors that happen from time to time. Still, they should be made aware that it was pretty obvious what they were doing. Like footballers, umpires can put in shocking performances and sometimes get jeered by the crowd. Same deal here, so long as people don't go overboard I guess. Hopefully they've reviewed the game and seen the gaffs they made. The last game that was umpired this bad was a late season game against Failurewood a few years back. The same guy gave the Pies 4 free kick goals in around 5 minutes in the 2nd quarter, including a double that got them back into the game. Coincidence I guess?

The free kick count was due to the fact we were continually second to the ball and were lazy in our attempts to win it. Have you thought that the free kick count was in line with how much they were completely smashing us.

Pisses me off when people expect the free kick count to be equal. Its really not difficult to fathom that one team can get more frees. Yes some of the decisions weren't the best but they were the ones making all the play so that is why they got the rub of the green.

That was part true. No question some undisciplined play contributed to that amazing free imbalance. But if you look at the vision again, and I have, you'll see quite a few shockers that weren't there. Several examples of North players taking a dive with Blues defenders just behind them, being awarded a push-in-the-back without any contact being made. Happened a lot. It was like they were anticipating frees from certain Carlton players (notably AJ who was targetted), even if they didn't in fact infringe. Lots of 50-50's went against us well. It was terrible umpiring. Hopefully they've identified the gaffs they made during their review. Would be unhappy if our official spat at an ump - that is not on. But if he just spat his chewy into the ground in disgust then I like his passion. Anyway, it really doesn't matter. We have no control over how well or poorly the umps perform in a game. If you can't play well enough to negate these factors you deserve to lose like we did against North. It just caught my attention because the umpiring was just so bad that night. Usually it doesn't interest me, because in most games the bad decisions are less frequent and even themselves out over the game.

Its impossible for umpires to never make mistakes, its human nature. I don't see you complaining when Carlton get the better side of the umpires, just bringing up the matches where we get 'dudded'.

I'll say it again. If we wanted the ball more and were first to it, this conversation wouldn't be required.

Sublime I think you miss the point. Wayne has seen 27 yrs of footy as an official. I'm tipping he is qualified to pass judgement on umpiring. Let's not forget how terrible they were. The gestapo at the AFL have become like the North Korean govt in terms of controlling opinions that don't suit them and it's not right. I have no issue with umpires but when they are shit they should expect some criticism. I can't belive the CFC suspended a loyal servant for giving them a spray. Says plenty about the lack of spirit at carlton at the moment.

There is a time, place and manner which any issue should be raised. I don't care if he has seen 127 years of football as an official, its still not his place to have a sooky la.
