Carlton V Dogs game thread

The Bulldogs were playing insanely well. Looking at this match as a turning point for their season (why do opposition teams do that against us?0.

They controlled our half forward line and spread like mofos. Lace out delivery to Barry hall didn't hurt them either.

We were really slow and lazy tonight. It was weird being at the game and seeing it unfold in super slow-mo.

claps for Blue Bawls, explains this sort of basic reaction precisely.

Ours is a young team that has proved on it's day it can take the best teams in this comp and thouroughly beat them. But like all young teams, it lacks the inherent connection and understanding between players that comes with years of experiance and playing together. The players are still learning eachothers styles until it becomes second nature as to how eachother will act on game day. When that clicks, when Kreuzer places a ball perfectly into Murphy's arms who smooth as silk draws a player and hands off to the run of Gibbs who puts the ball straight onto Hendersons chest. When each player understands our gamestyle and eachother perfectly, than this team shall be great.

But right now, we waitand endure the growing pains

I agree with your comments above but at the same time questions have to be asked and it wasn't just today it has been for the last 4 weeks. OUr confidence is shot and we are not playing at all like a team. Our effort is abismal at times. We don't do the 1% well, we are very bad at blocking and shepharding. Our tacking is non existant at times, our basic skills are unbelievably bad at times . Our structures leak goals. I too wish i had the answers but questions have to be asked is Ratts getting the best out of this team. Does he need a Mentor? Why aren't Carlton playing as a team? Many games this year including today seemed to only have option A, and when that fails were stuffed, option B doesn't exist.. What did Carlton do to change the game today? We apparently have a tackling coach? Why are we so bad at it? We don't really have that many injuries, we have close to a full squad to choose from.

One can accept a loss, it's the way you loose that hurts.

I put it down to the ins and outs we've had over the past few weeks. Whenever we get a good thing going, we lose typically a key player to injury or suspension and our structure suffers making it difficult to get a rhythm going. Opposition coaches also look at our strengths and work out how to nullify them (small forwards were smashed today). And take nothing away from an outstanding Dogs outfit. They beat us comprehensibly everywhere - much like we did against St Kilda...

Nice to see your own fans leaving at 3/4 time. Thats what loyal support is :thumbsd::thumbsd:

I saw that. Was quite a few too.

Myself, i left halfway through the last (did it against the lions too) as my missus is 7 months pregnant and some dills love to shove and bump there way out of aisles:thumbsu:

First game I've been to in a very long time and I want my money back.

Never seen so many people leave the one place as at 3/4 time.

I stayed. Might as well watch the whole debacle. There were a couple of last quarter highlights.

What were the highlights? I switched it off after the first half disgrace.

Isn't that the first time they've beaten us under Ratten?

Thoroughly un-Carlton like performance against the Dogs at Etihad.

We usually match up well against them.

Agreed. I thought we'd get nailed as per recent past.

Different team with Hall up front, unfortunately.

Only heard fragments of the call, but I don't think this is the whole story.

IIRC you would beat us running the ball out of defence and in the midfield, which I think broke down today for you FWIW.

*fixed*

Who would want to coach Carlton and play for the Blues after reading what our supporters write?

Yet you slag off people who work hard to pay for their memberships and who get pissed off when they have to watch/put up with garbage football as per the last 6 weeks.

The average fan isn't a well paid, pampered footballer.

How dare these people who wear their heart on their sleeve in their support of the club actually expect the players to show a bit of heart too.

Can't have it both ways hero.

Our list is fantastic and our team today was two or three players short of full strength. We just got pantsed by a team that turned up. I put it down to lack of experience in coping with confidence fails more than anything else and these losses add to each player's development.

How the hell we get our mojo back, I have no idea, but "SACK RATTS, DROP A, B, C and DELIST X, Y, Z" are the most stupid and sadly predictable responses. Those who make these assertions are clueless or they'd be working for an AFL team where their opinions count.

So instead of breaking out the Wiltshire stay sharps whenever we have a loss, harden the f*** up and support the goddamn team, you idiots.

I disagree with the bit on the list is fantastic bit. We have a group of 5-7 players who turn up regularly. The rest is a division between 1) developing young players who just need games to see if they are the real deal, or 2) fit in our second group of players (6+) who only look good/great when we are on or snipering a top team. When we are not on, those same players (6+) look absolutely woeful...i mean really embarrassing.

Most on here can take a loss so it is not a matter of hardening the f**** up...it is just that as a supporter, we dont want to cringe with embarassment!!

I for one thought the Doggies would smash us this year, and had to call on all my strengths as a supporter not to load up $500 on the doggies to smash us by 30+!! It was one of the first games we would not have caught them on the hop!

Hi i'm a levelheaded individual LOL jk i'm a Carlton Supporter.

The bipolar ism around here is terrible. Have a win and everything is great, have a loss and the world comes tumbling down. Blame Ratten for everything, its totally his fault... more like the insipid work and skill rate of the players.

Skillwise, on balance we are no better than last year, the plyers in fact are those who appear to suffer from bi polar.

I saw Hoops and Robbo start laughing at 1/4 time in our huddle, next thing you know hoops was doing his shoelaces and Robbo had his finger in his mouth hiding his smile.

I don't know if Ratten has the players anymore.

Look, last nights performance was pretty poor. When we play well and loose to a good side it's fine. This wasn't the case last night. Loosing because we lack the skills we have demonstrated in other games is pretty terrible. We had no energy in our tackles, no effort in our pace.

I agree its the players more-so than anything. They seem like a group that just isn't switched on all too often. Skills are lacking, as is match day application. There is only so much a coach can do if his players don't want to pull their weight. So many are not prepared to do the running or hard work required week in, week out.

Which is why Ratten might not be the man for us.

Regardless of what our individual opinions are of his coaching style/abilities the possibility is that that he's either

  • lost some of the players
  • is too matey with them
  • isn't the right fit for this team

Maybe we need someone from outside the club to come in and tell the players a few hard truths about themselves and their efforts.

I look at Brad Scott at the Kangaroos and what he's done with that list and I have to ponder if he can get that out of that list, why can't Ratts extract more out of ours given it's a more talented and deeper list at this stage.

And with all that said and done if it's not the coaches issue then perhaps we need to look at the type of players we've been recruiting.

If we've been focused on recruiting "athletes" over players who have more footy smarts but with a bit less athleticism then maybe thats the problem.

We get in the shit and cant think our way out of it while on the field.

Somethings not right. And burying our heads in the sand and saying its alright it'll turn around won't fix the issue and won't allow us to improve our game or inconsistency.
