Most football people suggest that the national draft is where you build your football team for the future. I've done a bit of homework and have come up with the following. Since 1993, only 4 players have played 50 games or more with Carlton after being picked up via the national draft: Simon Beaumont ('93), Aaron Hamill and Scott Camporeale ('94) and Anthony Franchina ('96).
Adrain Hickmott was traded to Carlton in the '95 summer and has played over 100 games.
Matthew Lappin was traded to Carlton in the '98 summer and has played over 50 games.
In the pre-season draft since '93, Pearce, Rice, Clape, Manton and Hulme have played more than 50 games.
I've looked closely at the 1997 to 1999 national drafts and these are the players we have drafted. Had we not traded picks (in 1999), I have listed players Carlton could have drafted. I know that hindsight is a wonderful thing, but it makes for interesting reading. After the players names, I have put in the number they went in the draft.
1997 - Kris Massie (7), Adam Chatfield (23), Craig Black (55), Trent Hopner (70), John Hynes (80) and Ben Thompson (83).
Players we could have drafted are Chris Tarrant (8), Chad Cornes (9), Jason Saddington (11), Dean Solomon (20), Nick Stevens (25), Simon Black (31), Adam Goodes (43), Andrew Kellaway (71) and Nathan Thompson (82)
1998 - Murray Vance (6), Brendon Fevola (38), Ian Prendergast (58) and Brett Backwell (67)
Players we could have drafted are Lenny Hayes (11), Adam Ramanauskas (12), Brett Burton (16) and Danny Jacobs (36)
1999 - Richard Kelly (60), Ryan Houlihan (73), Jeremy Dukes (80), Trent Hotton (86) and Andrew Merrington (90)
Traded picks 16, 31 and 46 for Mansfield and O'Reilly
Had we not traded these 3 picks, we could have drafted Brad Green (19) and Jonathon Brown (30)
No wonder Carlton has no depth at the moment. Lets hope that the kids we have drafted in the last few years kick on and lift Carlton back to where they belong.
