MARC Murphy is under Chris Judd's wing nowadays, in more ways than one.
At Carlton, insiders say that Judd's luring at the end of 2007 took unwanted attention from Murphy, who was so outstanding early in his career that he began drawing taggers in his second season. Last year, the markers went to Judd instead, Murphy was freed up and at 20, he finished second in the best and fairest behind the great Judd.
Murphy is watching and learning from one of the best midfield runners the game has ever had, and at close range.
Matthew Kreuzer is five kilograms heavier at the start of the 2009 season than he was as a callow boy a year ago. He needs to be, of course, to play as a primary ruckman in this competition. But more to the point, the coaching and conditioning staff have had to pull him back in the pre-season, lest he burn himself out, such is his appetite for self-improvement.
Then there is Bryce Gibbs, the third of Carlton's much-trumpeted cluster of No. 1 draft picks and, perhaps, the best of all. Carlton people roll their eyes and drool at the mention of his name. Like Kreuzer, he has put on bulk and strength in the off-season in preparation for the tumult ahead, and lifted his training intensity. Gibbs was already fifth in the club championship in just his second season; he could be anything this year.
Gibbs wants to learn; demands to get better. "'They're all good kids to coach," said Riley. "No bigheads. They've got humility, they're selfless, they're great young men."
