So, it's just recently rolled past 10 years when the body of 15 year old Carly Ryan washed up on the beach at Horseshoe Bay in South Australia.
Carly had been beaten, strangled and thrown from a cliff into the ocean by Gary Francis Newman, a 50 year old who had lured Carly online under the fake profile of "Brandon", a 20 year old emo from Texas.
Newman was found guilty of murder and jailed.
This case unfortunately sticks pretty closely with me as I was at one point very good friends with Carly Ryan. We had met on the bus home from school (she was 13, I was 16) and became pretty good friends. We bonded a lot over music. We drifted apart after she got right into the emo thing, dropped out of school and started hanging out with some people I had no interest in hanging out with.
We started reconnecting in the month before she was murdered, where I remember to this day she told me about "Brandon" and how hot he was etc. If only we'd known hey.
