Tenace was a excellent pick-up.
Cam Thurley was a big surprise. Supposed to be a small forward. For Geelong to draft him so early at 22 ahead of the likes of Moody and Dyson was a huge surprise.
Spencer was an alright pick-up. Yet I'm shocked we didn't pick-up Ricky Dyson or even Callum Burgess. I stand by what I say that we shouldn't go for tall forwards unless their something special. Dyson went one pick after Spencer. So we still in the mix for him. He's a wonderful finisher, great disposal. We should have picked him.

Geelong has selected Kane Tenace from the Murray Bushrangers with its first pick in the 2004 National AFL Draft. Tenace, who stands at 182cm, is an outstanding midfield prospect, aged 18.

afl.com.au describes Tenace as an electrifying inside midfielder, that has pace to burn and has the uncanny ability to break away from pack situations. A high possession winner, Tenace won Murray’s best and fairest award and was named All-Australian after representing Vic Country in the National AFL under 18 championships in 2003. He also capped off a fine year at the National AFL Draft camp, where he was ranked in the top 10 per cent for the 20-metre sprint.

Although I am sure Kane is an absolute gun, the fact remains he is a MIDFIELDER!! We dont need anymore midfielders, we have plenty of them and now we have added another to the list. Why?  Sure, some people will say "You select the best player available" well if that player is not what you need then you let him go. Fergus Watts was available and is a gun forward, exactly what we need. Instead we pass in a forward, and go for another midfielder. When will our club learn. We put all this effort into trying to recruit a Forward in trade week, and then come National Draft day we throw all that out of the window and select ANOTHER midfielder.

That being said, I do have confidence and faith in Steven Wells and the recruiting team. They have showed over the years their ability to select gun players.

Mark Blake is a forward/ruckman who would have gone top 10 if he wasn't taken under the father-son rule, so it's fair enough to expect us to select the best player available with our first round pick.

For anyone who's interested, you can see some vision of Kane Tenace in the Under 18's Championships by clicking on the link below and selecting Kane Tenace.

We picked up a key forward in Matthew Spencer. He's one of those players who will put their body on the line; always presenting himself at a marking contest and giving it a red hot go. Also add to that that he is pretty strong.

We have a number of forwards now, Lonergan, McCarthy, Playfair and to a lesser extent Mackie and now with Spencer. That is on top of Kingsley, Mooney etc. I think we are more than covered in the big man stocks for the moment. Spencer sounds like a bargain at 42.

Tenace is a superb player, brilliant skills and blistering pace. More than happy we get a player who is ready to play next year than someone who will take a number of years to develop. But before you criticise Wells, look at his record over the past few years and you really can't complain.

I'm more than happy to get Kane. A potential star in the making.

Dasher please, you don't pass over kids like Tenace. You say we have a great midfielder but I don't agree. We are solid and dependable but lack class, Who's gunna develop into the next Voss, Buckley, Bell, Black, Riccuito, or Harvey?

Tenace can be that guy. As I've said we lack genuine pace and skill in our midfield. Corey, Bartel, Chapman, Enright, and Ling are neither sensationally quick or have super skills. Tenace will provide the perfect balance between hardworking and cream.

Spencer was also a very good get at 42. Will add to the long list of talls we already have

Thurley at 22 was a shock. The more i think about it the more I can't believe it. Why you'd overlook a guy like Moody (or another for that matter) for a guy who has been a serviceable VFL player for three years has got me stuffed!

Geelong has lacked a quality small forward and with Chapman looking to play more of a midfield role and Ablett to spend more time in the middle as well, I can understand why we went with Thurley. Perhaps it will be 4th time lucky with Tassie players in recent times, and the way I look at it, Thurley has to be better then either Brockman, Bennett or Street.

i don't have a problem if they think he's good enough but i can't see why they wasted pick 22 on him. Why not just use pick 54 on him. So what if we don't get a pick in the PSD. I forgot we may miss out on Shannon Motlop

I can guarentee there won't be any players in the same postcode of Matt Moody or Jay Nash's quality come pick 5 in that draft.

I'm happy to give the club the benefit of the doubt until we see how Thurley goes and also who we get in the pre-season draft.
